STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Tigers had an exciting start to the SEC Championships on Thursday (May 14), highlighted by yet another SEC title for senior Kearsten Peoples, and podium finishes for sophomore Kaitlyn Fischer and senior Macauley Garton, who finally clinched the javelin school record in one of his final meets in the black and gold.
"What a great start to the weekend for the Tigers," Head Coach Brett Halter said. "You always want to get on the board fast, and we did that and are going to have a lot of positive energy going into the next couple of days."
Peoples was up first, opening the weekend with her fourth SEC title in the past three years, taking the win in the hammer throw with a top toss of 63.31m (207-8). Peoples entered the weekend ranked first in the conference with her PR and school record performance of 66.17m (217-1) from the Tom Botts Invitational two weeks ago. Thus continues the collection of conference titles for Peoples, who owns a Big 12 gold in the discus and top honors in the SEC for the outdoor shot put, indoor shot put, and weight throw.
"Obviously, that was just a terrific effort on Kearsten's part," Halter said. "She competed hard and came out on top in a really tough field, it was exciting to watch."
The men's hammer throw took the ring next, with senior Brian Duncan throwing his way into the finals out of the first flight with a top mark of 59.81m (196-2). He would not improve upon that throw during his final three attempts, and closed the competition in ninth overall.
The field events continued to roll into the evening, with the men's javelin taking to the runway for one of the most exciting competitions of the day as all three of the top marks came during the final round of throws. Among those three was senior Macauley Garton, who bested the 17-year-old Mizzou School Record twice during the competition, first with an attempt measuring in at 75.53m (247) which put him in the lead heading into the final round, and then once more on his last throw with a heave of 77.47m (254-2). Garton closed with his first podium finish at the SEC Championships, taking third overall.
"That was just a remarkable javelin competition, really world-class," Halter said. "Macauley resets the school record by over ten feet and finishes third in the league meet but is fifth in the U.S. among college and professionals, top 40 in the world. That's what the SEC is all about -- competing against the best at their best and seeing how it works out. It's thrilling."
The Tigers also saw some exciting finishes on the track, starting with the men's 400m hurdles where junior Drake Stuedemann qualified for a spot in the finals on Saturday with his 52.06 finish. That time, also good for a new PR in the event, moves him up into the No. 8 position in the Mizzou Track & Field history books.
With the final event of the evening came the final podium finish for the Tigers on day one, with sophomore Kaitlyn Fischer battling through a tight 10,000m race to close in second with a final crossing of 34:10.52. Fischer entered the meet ranked fourth in the SEC for the event, and now walks away with her first All-SEC medal of the outdoor track season.
"Kaitlyn's finish was absolutely remarkable," Halter said. "She just ran really tough, pushed one of the top runners in the U.S. and proved that she's one of those people as well."
"This is championship track. You just don't know how it's going to go, the only thing you can control is yourself and how hard you're willing to compete," Halter said. "The focused efforts of this team are just extraordinary and we're going to show that over the next couple of days."
Events at the Mike Sanders Track Complex in Starkville, Miss., will continue on Friday, starting at 2 p.m. CT with the men's long jump, featuring senior Jonathan Ilori, junior Tony Carodine, and freshman John Warren.
