Winning Efforts Close Texas, Tennessee Weekend

March 28, 2015

AUSTIN, Tx. - Senior Jill Rushin defended her shot put title at the prestigious Texas Relays on Saturday (March 28), closing out what has been an exciting opening weekend for the Tigers' outdoor season.  All in all, the teams depart the three meets in Texas and Tennessee with four personal records and five All-Time Ten Marks.

The Tigers divided their forces between three meets over the weekend, with a group traveling down to Austin, Tx., for the Texas Relays, as well as the Bobcat Invitational just south in San Marcos, and the rest of the team out in Nashville, Tenn., for Vanderbilt's Black and Gold Invitational.

Senior Jill Rushin found hersef back at the top of the podium for the second consecutive year at the Texas Relays, reclaiming her title in the women's shot put with a top toss of 17.04m (55-11).  Although that was Rushin's first shot put competition of the outdoor season, it was her third time taking the ring this weekend, after she placed sixth in the discus at the Relays earlier on Saturday, and took third in the discus at the neighboring Bobcat Invitational on Thursday.

Joining her in the ring was fellow-senior Kearsten Peoples, who also had a busy weekend, finishing second in the hammer and sixth in the discus at the Bobcat Invitational earlier in the week.

The Bobcat Invitational also featured some exciting performances in the field events, with freshman Shammai Ilis making her way into the All-Time Top Ten for the women's triple jump with her mark of 12.31m (40-4.50).  Good for fourth in the field, she now sits at No. 3 All-Time for Mizzou in the event.  Just behind her in the competition was sophomore Danielle Williams, whose 12.25m (40-2.25) would have also put her into the Mizzou record books if not for the strong tailwind.

On the track, sophomore LaQuisha Jackson was one of the seven women featured in the invitational section of the 200m dash.  She placed fifth in the field with a time of 23.66 which, if not for the wind, would have been the second-fastest time in school history.

The remainder of the day's events came out of the Black and Gold Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., where sophomore Jennifer Berilla continued her climb through the ranks of the women's javelin with a new PR, and All-Time Top Ten performance, placing second in the field.  Her top throw of 39.46m (129-5) nudges her into the No. 10 spot in the Mizzou record books.

Other highlights from Nashville include several event wins from the mid-distace and distance groups.  On the men's side, freshman Marc Dubrick crossed for the first win of the day in the men's 2000m Steeplechase, crossing in 6:02.04, just ahead of fellow-freshman Sheldon Keence.

In the men's 3000m run, junior Will Crocker returned to the track after an exciting indoor season, culminating in the second-fastest mile time in school history at the Tyson Invitational (4:01.34).  Crocker timed through with a win to kick off his outdoor season, crossing in 8:24.11 for the 3000m.

Moving down into the men's 800m run, sophomore Cain Winebrenner hit a new PR en route to his event win, clocking through in 1:51.83.

Finally, senior Drake Stuedemann had a promising start to his final season in the black and gold, cruising to a win in the 400m hurdles with a final time of 52.40, just off his 52.33 PR.

On the women's side, junior Liz Reida got her first taste of the 800m run since joining the Tigers, clocking through in 2:10.53 for second overall.

Freshman Karissa Schweizer joined her in the runner-up position, hitting 9:35.64 in the 3000m run.

The Tigers will have a week off before they retake the track in Fayetteville, Ark., for the John McDonnell Invitational on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11.  For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
