COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou wrestling redshirt senior Alan Waters has been named the MAC Wrestler of the Week for Feb. 16-22, as announced today by the Mid-American Conference league office. Waters turned in an impressive showing last weekend in Iowa City at the 2015 National Duals Finals, as he went 3-0 with a pair of victories over top-5 ranked opponents.
Wednesday's honor marks the third career MAC Wrestler of the Week honor for Waters. The Kansas City, Mo. native also picked up three Big 12 Wrestler of the Week awards while the Tigers competed in the Big 12 Conference.
Waters began his outstanding weekend on Saturday, Feb. 21 with a win over then No. 1 ranked Jesse Delgado (Illinois) by a 6-2 decision. Later that afternoon he took down Scott Parker (Lehigh) by a 6-3 decision to help Mizzou advance to the National Duals championship matchup.
On Sunday, Feb. 22, the redshirt senior defeated No. 6 Thomas Gilman (Iowa) by a 5-4 decision in an exciting dual opener with the Hawkeyes. For the 2014-15 regular season, Waters accumulated an incredible 10 wins over top-20 opponents at 125 pounds, including seven victories against top-10 foes.
No. 1 Mizzou wrestling begins postseason play next weekend at the Hearnes Center with the 2015 MAC Wrestling Championships. Competition on Saturday, March 7 is set for a 2 p.m. start while first matches on Sunday, March 8 begin at 12 p.m.
