Baton Rouge, La.--Junior Michelle Hudyn proved to be the Tigers' secret weapon on Monday as she earned a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds. The Tigers used a strong offensive effort to overcome a 20-point deficit in the second half, but it was not enough to finish ahead of LSU. Mizzou drops to 12-10 overall and 2-7 in SEC play with Monday night's 74-65 loss in Baton Rouge.
The two Tiger teams came out to win, keeping things close throughout the half. Frericks led the Tigers in the half, tallying nine points and seven rebounds to lead all players. Not only that, but Michelle Hudyn provided a much needed spark of the bench as she knocked down six first-half points of her own. The Tigers stayed close throughout the half, but LSU pulled away to take an 11 point lead into the locker room at halftime.
Keeping with tradition, Mizzou held LSU to just four second chance points in the first half, while the Tigers tallied 13 of their own. This season, Mizzou has been holding opponents to an average of just 9.5 second chance points while averaging 15.2 itself. Mizzou finished with 17 second chance points in the game.
LSU proved to be a tough matchup as the home team kicked off the second half with a 10-1 to pull ahead by 20 points. Mizzou was able to chip away at the lead, however, going on a 10-0 run to pull within two with just over eight minutes left in the game. In that run, Mizzou knocked down 6-of-6 from the free throw line thanks to sharpshooting by Frericks and Juanita Robinson.
Mizzou didn't let up, however, Maddie Stock put the Tigers back on the lead with a clutch three-pointer. Mizzou held the 59-58 lead with 4:38 on the clock in the second half. Mizzou and LSU traded buckets to keep things close, but the LSU Lady Tigers finished with the win.
The Tigers return home this week to host No. 14 Texas A&M on Thursday and Auburn on Sunday. Thursday's game will honor Chancellor Loftin, and the first 250 student will receive free bow tie t-shirts. In addition, the Tigers will honor the 1984-85 Big 8 Championship team and recognize head coach Joann Rutherford, who will also stand as Missouri's SEC Legend this season.
