CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Mizzou baseball suffered its first setback of the season, falling to 4-1 on the year as Texas A&M Corpus Christi topped the Tigers, 3-2, in game one of the Kleberg Bank College Classic on Thursday night (Feb. 19) at Whataburger Field. Mizzou tallied just three hits in the loss, two from sophomore center fielder Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill). Sophomore Peter Fairbanks (St. Louis, Mo.) took his first loss of the season after allowing three earned runs over 3.1 innings.

"Well I thought Pete struggled and gave Corpus Christi too many baserunners, but at the same time we only had one inning where we put things together offensively," head coach Tim Jamieson said on KTGR following the game. "We have to do a better job of getting runners on base and crating more opportunities."

Despite tallying just three hits and four walks, Mizzou's bullpen kept the game within reach through the later innings, but the Islanders' Garrett Harris was very good, picking up his second win of the season. He went 7.0 innings, allowing just two hits and two earned runs while walking four and striking out four.

Mizzou fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the second as Islander catcher Lukas Hermanson singled in a run from third base off of Fairbanks. But Mizzou jumped ahead in the top of the third, sparked by a leadoff walk by senior Logan Pearson (Bentonville, Ark.). Sophomore catcher Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) then drew a walk and Ring delivered a big hit, lacing a double down the right field line to score Pearson. Klages then scored the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by Brett Peel (St. Charles, Mo.).

But the Islanders jumped on Fairbanks again in the third, tying the game on a one-out single by Kyle Danford. Lukas Hermanson then gave the Islanders the lead on a single into right field in the bottom of the fourth. That's when Harris settled in as he walked just two batters while not allowing another hit from the fourth through seventh innings before he was relieved in the eighth.

Senior righty Andrew Schwaab (St. Charles, Mo.) kept Mizzou in the game, tossing a career-high 3.2 innings while allowing just one hit with a pair of walks, picking up a pair of strikeouts, both looking. Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) then relieved Schwaab and struck out the side in the eighth, giving the Tigers a chance in the ninth.

Peel led off the ninth with an infield single and stole second as Josh Lester (Columbus, Ga.) struck out for out No. 1. Peel then took third on a groundout to short by Howard on a very close play. That left the game to Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) who flew out to center to leave the tying run stranded 90 feet away.

Mizzou will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as it plays Sam Houston State in its second game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic. Junior and reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week Reggie McClain (Duluth, Ga.) will get the start for Mizzou in that game.
