COLUMBIA, Mo. - Karissa Schweizer has become the second consecutive Tiger to be recognized as the SEC Women's Freshman Runner of the Year, as released by the conference office on Tuesday, November 11. Following in the footsteps of teammate Kaitlyn Fischer, who won the award last year, Schweizer was the top freshman finisher in the field at the SEC Championships on October 31 in Tuscalooa, Ala., crossing in 17th overall with a final time of 20:41.13 for the 6000-meter course.
Schweizer has had an exciting debut season in the black and gold, finishing second for the Tigers in four of her six meets thus far this season, and leading the pack at the Greater Louisville Classic (Oct. 4) with an impressive 11th-place finish in the field of 301. The Urbandale, Ia., native arrived at Mizzou with an already-impressive resume that includes 15 IAHSAA All-State finishers while competing for Dowling Catholic HS.
She is among the Tigers' squad that now looks to the NCAA Midwest Regional and the opportunity to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. The Regional Championships will be held in Peoria, Ill., on Friday (Nov. 14).
