Black Tops Gold at Women's Basketball Scrimmage

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Seven different players scored for the Black Team as it defeated Gold, 39-31, in the Mizzou women's basketball annual Black & Gold scrimmage. Sophomore forward Kayla McDowell (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Black Team with nine points and two boards and freshman guard Carrie Shepard (Steele, Mo.) pitched in seven points. The two teams played in two 10-minute halves.

Team Black shot 45.5-percent from the floor and limited Team Gold to 26.7-percent shooting. Junior Michelle Hudyn (Kitchener, Ontario) added six points for Team Black and Maddie Stock (Town & Country, Mo.) pitched in four points.

Junior guard Morgan Stock (Town & Country, Mo.) led Team Gold with 11 points and junior point guard Lianna Doty (St. Louis, Mo.) added nine points, three assists and two boards for Team Gold. Stock scored all nine of her points on 3-pointers. Doty connected on all three of her attempts from the floor as well. Freshman Bri Porter (Columbia, Mo.) was another bright spot for Team Gold with six points, two assists and a rebound.

As a team, Mizzou combined to hit nine 3-pointers while doing so on 36-percent shooting. The two teams also combined to assist on 17 of 24 field goals in the scrimmage. The difference in the game was an 11-2 advantage in points off of turnovers for the Black Team as Gold committed 10 turnovers to just five for Team Black.

In the first 10-minute half, Bree Fowler (Kansas City, Mo.) nailed a big three for the black squad after some great ball movement to give her squad an 8-6 lead midway through the first frame. McDowell then used an athletic post move to extend the run to 5-0 for the black squad.

The Black squad then used several defensive stops and a big 3-pointer from sophomore guard Sierra Michaelis (Mercer, Mo.) to open a 13-6 lead before a pair of Gold buckets drew the team closer. McDowell then drained a shot at the buzzer to give the Black team a 17-12 lead at intermission.

McDowell then kept firing in the second half, draining a deep 3-pointer to extend the lead. That was all the Team Black needed to pull away for the 39-31 win, controlling play throughout the game.
