AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 25 Mizzou soccer team's comeback attempt fell short as Missouri suffered a 3-2 loss to Auburn Friday night in Auburn, Ala. Mizzou trailed 2-0 and 3-1 in the second half but could not manage the equalizer. The loss dropped Missouri's record to 9-3-2 overall and 4-2-0 in Southeastern Conference action, while Auburn improved to 7-4-3 and 1-2-3.
"I want to give all credit to Auburn on the win," Head Coach Bryan Blitz said. "They had a great game plan and played very well throughout the game. I know our team will bounce back."
The match saw a flurry of four goals in a four minute span midway through the second half. Auburn took a 2-0 advantage with a tally in the 63rd minute.
Just 10 seconds later, junior Reagan Russell put Mizzou within 2-1 with a score of her own. Russell dribbled across the edge of the 18-yard box and unleashed a low shot that beat the Auburn keeper and went into the lower left netting. The tally was the sixth of the year for Russell to tie her for the team lead.
Auburn again gained a two-goal advantage, 3-1, with another goal less than two minutes later.
However, Mizzou responded once again with its second tally of the game in the 67th minute. Stationed near the penalty spot, Russell played the ball to freshman Savannah Trujillo on the left. Trujillo took a dribble to her left and sent a left footed shot into the left corner of the goal for a 3-2 game. The score was Trujillo's third of the season.
Mizzou continued to press for an equalizer in the remaining 20 minutes of the match. Sophomore Melanie Donaldson had a close chance off a corner kick but her five-yard shot flew right into an Auburn defender.
After a scoreless first half, Auburn took a 1-0 advantage in the 52nd minute on a one-time off a long cross into the box.
Missouri next travels to Athens, Ga., to face No. 16 Georgia on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. ET.
