COLUMBIA, Mo. - Redshirt senior goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein broke Missouri's career shutout record as the Mizzou soccer team (3-1-2) earned a 1-0 win over UT Martin (4-1-0) Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. Sauerwein, a North Richland Hills, Texas, native, now owns career program records in wins, shutouts, saves, games played in goal, games started in goal and minutes played in goal.
The Tigers improved to 3-1-2, while UT Martin fell for the first time this season, dropping to 4-1-0 on the year.
Despite a number of scoring chances in the first half and at the start of the second, Mizzou did not get on the scoreboard until the 55th minute when junior Reagan Russell and senior Kaysie Clark combined to give the team a 1-0 lead.
Missouri played a corner short to Clark, who sent a lofting ball to the far post. Russell, stationed at the far post, easily knocked the pass into the lower left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. The assist was Clark's fifth of the year, which tied her single-season best from her freshman year in 2011.
Despite a number of scoring opportunities in the opening half, neither team managed to find the back of the net. In the 19th minute, senior Clark passed a ball up into the box to freshman Savannah Trujillo. The freshman played the ball back to Clark but the pass barely eluded the senior and went into the arms of the Skyhawk keeper.
Before her eventual game-winner, Russell narrowly missed putting the Tigers ahead earlier in the second half. Just three minutes into the frame, she ran onto a pass at the right post but her header bounced off the crossbar.
Three minutes after her tally, Russell and Clark almost teamed up again for another Tiger goal. Clark dribbled to the right endline before passing back in front of the net, but Russell's eight yard one-timer flew over the goal.
Missouri had a 15-10 shots advantage, including a 12-4 edge in the final 45 minutes.
Sauerwein made three saves in net to preserve her third shutout of the season.
The Tigers return to the pitch for a pair of home matches at Walton Stadium next weekend. The squad hosts Montana on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. before a game against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12:30 p.m.
