MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Mizzou Cross Country took on their first big test of the season on Saturday, matching up against four of the top-ranked men's teams, six of the top-ranked women's, at the 29th Annual Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.  The women walked away with an 11th-place finish, the men 14th, behind a pair of top-20 individual finishers in sophomores Kaitlyn Fischer and T.J. Carey.

"This was a very interesting day.  The hotter than normal conditions, course and high-level field made it extremely challenging, but we had a few standout performances on both sides," Head Coach Marc Burns, currently in the midst of his first year with the Tigers, said. "T.J. Carey and Kaitlyn Fischer came up big despite the conditions.  They ran tough and looked great!  Dan Roe and Karissa Schweizer ran solid races in the two spot for us on each side.  I was also impressed with the efforts of our third runners, Courtney Wood and Jordan Cook."

THE TIGER MEN
The men's squad started the day off at 12:20 p.m., lining up against four of the top 30-ranked teams in the NCAA, and three-fellow Southeastern Conference (SEC) schools - Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt.  Leading the way for the black and gold was a group of sophomores in T.J. Carey, who finished 12th in the field of 301, followed by Dan Roe (64th), Jordan Cook (86th), Drew White (123rd), and Tyler Rusboldt (125th).  The five scorers earned a 14th-place finish for the Tigers, the top team placing for the conference.  They also beat out fellow-Midwest Regional competitors Illinois State and Nebraska.

THE TIGER WOMEN
The women also matched up against several of the top 30-ranked teams in the NCAA with No. 3 Michigan State, No. 9 Iowa State, No. 11 Butler, No. 24 Vanderbilt, No. 28 Minnesota, and No. 30 Weber State.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Fischer was back in the lead for the Tigers, finished 14th overall in the field of 390, followed by freshman Karissa Schweizer in 58th, who was the second across the line for the black and gold for the second consecutive week.  Rounding out the top five was senior Courtney Wood (72nd), and juniors Maria Effinger (124th) and Sam Garrett (151st).

The Tigers' 11th-place team finished put them in ahead of Butler and Weber, ranked No. 11 and No. 30 in the NCAA heading into the weekend, and fellow-SEC competitor Texas A&M.

COMING UP...
It'll be a quick turnover for both teams, as they prepare for another big meet next weekend with the Greater Louisville Classic.

"We have many positives working for us right now, and we will recover from today and get prepared for Louisville next weekend," Burns said. "We have been training at a high level and have a great spirit about us.  Both teams have the potential to do special things this season.  We are all excited to get back to work this week!"
