COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou soccer team posted its third straight win to close out non-conference action in a 3-1 victory over CSUN Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium. Seniors Kaysie Clark and Taylor Grant notched goals for Missouri, while the Tigers' third and final tally of the game came on a CSUN own goal.
The Tigers improved to 5-1-2 on the season, while the Matadors fell to 2-3-1.
Despite early control from Mizzou, CSUN struck first with the match's opening goal in the 17th minute. Lyndsey Preston, who received a ball from Hannah Wissler, ripped a shot from the right corner of the box and into the upper left netting for a 1-0 Matador advantage.
Missouri continued to put pressure on CSUN's defense and was rewarded 11 minutes later with an equalizer. Freshman Jessica Johnson lofted a cross into the box that found the feet of freshman Savannah Trujillo. Trujillo then passed to her right to Clark, who took one dribble and poked her attempt to the right of the Matador keeper for a 1-1 game. The tally was the first of the season for Clark, while Trujillo and Johnson both recorded their second assists of the year.
In the 55th minute, Clark and Grant combined to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead over the Matadors. Clark, who received the ball near the right sideline off a short corner, sent a cross at the near post. Grant timed her jump correctly and headed the ball back on net for the 2-1 advantage.
The tally was the sixth goal of the year for Grant, while Clark added her eighth assist of the season on the play. Both totals are single-season bests for the duo. Additionally, Clark's nine assists are tied for ninth on Mizzou's single-season list, while her 19 career assists are tied for ninth on the Tigers' career record book.
The Tigers added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute when pressure from the Missouri offense forced CSUN into an own goal. Junior Reagan Russell, stationed near the right endline, crossed a pass in front of the net intended for Grant. A Matador defender cut off Grant but the pass hit off the CSUN player and into goal for a 3-1 Tiger lead.
Mizzou outshot CSUN 18-5 in the match and had 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Tigers are next in action on Friday, Sept. 19 against LSU at 6:30 p.m. in the Southeastern Conference opener. The match will be broadcast live on SEC Network +.
