COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou soccer team scored three unanswered goals to give Head Coach Bryan Blitz his 200th career win at Missouri as the Tigers notched a 4-3 double overtime victory over Montana Friday night at Walton Stadium. Senior Taylor Grant proved the hero as she scored the game-winner in the 105th minute to give the Tigers the win.
Playing its fourth overtime match of the young season, Mizzou improved to 4-1-2 on the year, while Montana fell to 3-4-0.
Blitz, in his 19th year at the helm of the Tigers, also stands just five wins away from 250 in his head coaching career.
Less than five minutes into the second overtime, freshman Alli Magaletta lofted a ball into the box that found senior Kaysie Clark. Clark eluded a defender then fed Grant, who one-timed a 10-yard shot into the upper netting for the Mizzou win. The tally was the team leading fifth of the year for Grant, while the assist was Clark's seventh of the season and 18th of her career, putting her into a tie for 10th on Missouri's career list.
The Grizzlies got on the board first, with a header off a corner in the fifth minute, to take an early 1-0 lead.
Missouri recouped to tie the contest at 1-1 in the 25th minute on Magaletta's first career tally. After freshman Savannah Trujillo's attempt bounced off the left post, Magaletta easily knocked the rebound past the Montana keeper for a 1-1 game.
Montana tallied goals in the 70th and 71st minutes to take a 3-1 advantage late in the second half but Missouri responded with scores of its own in the 76th and 81st minutes to knot the match at 3-3.
With the Tigers trailing 3-1 in the 76th minute, Clark passed a ball back to sophomore Melanie Donaldson, who promptly unleashed a laser from the right corner of the box and into the back of the net. The score was the first of the year for Donaldson, while Clark notched her sixth assist on the play.
Just five minutes later, Grant made a run into the box and was brought down by a Grizzly defender to give the Tigers a penalty kick. Sophomore Candace Johnson calmly stepped up and sent a low shot into the left corner of the net to tie the game a 3-3. The goal marked Johnson's first goal of the year and fourth goal of her Tiger career.
Both teams had chances in the final nine minutes of regulation but came up empty to send the game to overtime. Play went back and forth in the extra frames before Grant finally put the game away with her winner in the 105th minute.
Missouri posted a 27-15 shots advantage in the match, including a 15-9 edge in shots on goal.
Redshirt senior keeper McKenzie Sauerwein made six saves in goal.
The Tigers return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 12 as they host CSUN at 12:30 p.m.
