UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Taylor Grant tallied two goals but No. 10 West Virginia scored times in the second half to record a 3-2 win over the Missouri soccer team Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Tigers fell to 0-1-1 on the year, while the Mountaineers improved to 1-1-0.
Missouri took a quick lead as Grant notched her first goal of the match in the seventh minute. Fellow senior Kaysie Clark played a through ball up to Grant, who ran onto the ball at the top of the box. Grant then took a touch and struck a low shot that eluded the West Virginia keeper for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
The Mountaineers had chances in the first half, including a shot that bounced off the crossbar in the in the ninth minute but Missouri kept West Virginia out of the net.
Grant struck again just two minutes into the second half with her second tally of the game. Once again, Clark sent a pass up to Grant, who dribbled into the box, dodged a defender and easily put the ball in the net after the West Virginia keeper stumbled. The game marked the second two-goal contest of Grant's career, as she also tallied two in the 2013 season opener against Pacific.
Just six minutes later, the Mountaineers got within one, 2-1, after a sliding goal from Kate Schwindel.
West Virginia then knotted the match at 2-2 in the 62nd minute when Kelsie Maloney made a move in the box to get around redshirt keeper McKenzie Sauerwein and put the ball in the net.
In the 88th minute, Grant seemed poised to record a hat trick and give the Tigers the victory with a great run into the box. However, her 17-yard shot from the right corner flew just to the left of the goal.
West Virginia broke through again with just 1:28 remaining in the game for the game-winner. Kailey Utley played a cross across the box that Schwindel one-timed into the netting for the Mountaineer victory.
The Tigers are next in action next weekend as the team travels to Texas for two road games. Mizzou faces TCU on Friday, Aug. 29 in Fort Worth before a matchup with SMU on Sunday, Aug. 31 in Dallas. Both games will be played at 7 p.m. CT.
