COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss at the hands of No. 7 Vanderbilt Friday evening in an outdoor match at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-9 on the season and 0-3 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Commodores improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in SEC play.
The Commodores took the doubles point after recording wins at No. 2 and No. 3 competition. At No. 3, Vanderbilt's Georgina Sellyn and Sydney Campbell defeated sophomore Madison Rhyner and freshman Cassidy Spearman, 8-3. The duo of Frances Altick and Marie Casares posted an 8-5 win over sophomore Kelli Hine and freshman Tracy Dong at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.
In singles action, Vanderbilt took a 2-0 lead after Courtney Colton, ranked 81st in the nation, recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rhyner at No. 4. At No. 5 play, Lauren Mira bested Spearman, 6-3, 6-3, for a 3-0 advantage. The Commodores clinched the win after Altick posted a 6-0, 6-2, win over senior Rachel Stuhlmann at No. 3. A 6-3, 6-0 win for Marie Casares over Dong gave then gave the visiting squad a 5-0 lead.
Senior Cierra Gaytan-Leach and Hine both fought back after dropping their first sets to send their matches to a third and final set. Playing in a third-set tiebreak, Gaytan-Leach went back and forth with Sellyn, ranked No. 60 nationally, but ultimately fell 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Hine and No. 107 Campbell played out their third set, with Campbell prevailing 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
The Tigers return to the court on Sunday, March 9 as they host No. 22 Kentucky at 10 a.m. and Bradley at 3 p.m.
