COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 21 Mizzou Tigers fell 70-64 in overtime Wednesday evening at Mizzou Arena to the visiting Georgia Bulldogs in the 2014 SEC opener. Georgia had four players in double digits, led by 18 points from guard Charles Mann.
Georgia jumped out to a quick 8-0 advantage in the first half, prompting a quick timeout by Tigers head coach Frank Haith. Missouri would respond nicely thereafter, knotting the game at 17 apiece later on in the half. The Bulldogs, led by Kenny Gaines' five first half points, would soon re-gain the lead, which grew as large as 10 points.
A three pointer by senior Tony Criswell and a pair of free throws from junior Jordan Clarkson would cut the deficit to five points, and the Tigers trailed Georgia by a score of 30-25 at the half. Despite being outshot in the half (Mizzou 40-percent, Georgia 38.7-percent), the Bulldogs used four baskets from long distance to their advantage through the first 20 minutes at Mizzou Arena.
The second half of action saw a back-and-forth contest between the two SEC East opponents. Highlighted by six ties and eight lead changes over the course of the night, the Tigers and Bulldogs exchanged buckets to the last minute.
After a game-tying three from Clarkson with 0:53 seconds remaining, Missouri and Georgia would head to overtime to settle each team's conference opener.
The overtime period saw a flurry of runs by each squad. Missouri struck early, and gained a five point advantage after a three point play from Earnest Ross. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Georgia would go on to score 12 of the next 13 points, highlighted by buckets from Mann and Marcus Thornton.
The Bulldogs' big men played a crucial role in the upset victory at Mizzou Arena, as they out-rebounded the Tigers by a 43-34 margin (including a 15-7 advantage on offensive rebounds).
Junior Jabari Brown led Mizzou in scoring on the night, tallying 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Ross also delivered a solid night despite the loss, finishing with 15 points and four rebounds.
