HEAD COACH Ehren Earleywine
Opening Statement...
"Not exactly happy about our performance, obviously we didn't swing the bats very well, and it was tight. But at the end of the day we got a win, and that's the most important thing this time of the season."
On Nicole Hudson's performance...
"She did awesome. From a spectator's point of view, you know it's right whenever a drop-ball pitcher is missing low. Her misses were ankle-high, shoe-tops, shins, and then when she would throw a strike it was at the knees. That's the way good drop-ball pitchers look when you're watching them pitch, just like a sinker ball in baseball. Everything is down and that's what has gotten her in trouble this year when she's pitched in outings that she wasn't as successful. When she missed, she missed at the waist and the chest; when you start missing high with a drop ball, that's when you get hurt. I knew early on, by the second inning, that she was going to be effective. I didn't know she was going to be that effective. "
On his strategy regarding Chelsea Thomas...
"It was in the fifth inning that I got her up, and that was probably the most frustrated that I've been in a while, the fact that I had to get her up. Our hitters should've bailed her out. Nonetheless, my thinking was, if we get one run I'm going to go with Chelsea in the sixth and the seventh. Then we got three so I shut her down and told her if it gets to be 2-3 then you're going in. So that was the plan."
On the gamble of pitching Nicole Hudson tonight...
"Typically that kind of stuff doesn't bother me a whole lot, but I know that if that gamble doesn't work tonight, then this weekend is our last tournament. You can't win five games in two days with one pitcher, just being realistic, it can't happen. And so there was a tremendous amount of pressure on me for making that decision. Nicole and JJ and Corrin and Kelsea Roth, they bailed me out."
On expectations for tomorrow against Olivia Galati...
"I'm expecting us to win. She's a great rise-ball pitcher, great change-up. And that's enough right there."
SENIOR C Jenna Marston
On her homerun today...
"It was a pitch inside, and that's what she had just thrown me the pitch before so I was already looking in there. I was able to just drop the head of the bat on there. It's the swing that Coach Bradley has been working on with me for four years, trying to get that swing. I finally got it for once."
On this being her first homerun since her sophomore season...
"It's nice, in a game like this, to get one like that. It's kind of embarrassing when your whole team has to run out there and greet you at home plate."
SOPHOMORE SS Corrin Genovese
On tomorrow's game...
"I think getting the first one out of the way, that was the hardest one. Now we can relax and get back to what we have been doing all year which is hitting the ball hard; keep making plays. We're going to have Chelsea on the mound tomorrow and that does relax us, even though Nicole had a heck of a game today."
On Hofstra's pitcher, Olivia Galati....
"We know she's good, and she's shut down everybody for the last couple years. We watched her last year in the Super Regional so we know she can give us one of her best games, but we've got to hit the pitches we know we can hit and stick to our game plan like we've been doing all year. I think we will be successful like we have been."
SENIOR P Nicole Hudson
On her outing on the mound...
"I threw a lot of drops and was able to keep those at the knees for the most part. Most of all, the defense made some pretty incredible plays behind me so that was huge. I was feeling pretty good out there."
On what she did differently today...
"I felt like my spin was really good before the game so I was really confident going in."
On her confidence after today's game....
"The more I go out there and have a good outing, the more confidence I get. It's nice to go out there and get a full seven innings and feel pretty confident."
STONY BROOK HEAD COACH MEGAN BRYANT
Opening Statement....
"Tough ball game for us today, we came into this day wanting to win it, not just happy to be here. I think if we had been able to capitalize a little bit earlier on some of those base runners and put a run or two on the board, it would've given us a little bit of momentum. We didn't make that happen. I thought our defense was pretty decent and I thought Allie threw a nice game. We had a shot at this one, so it's disappointing to us, but we know we can win this venue and we can compete with these teams, and we look to rebound tomorrow.
On her team only recording two hits in the game...
"Well the game of softball can be like that sometimes, it's not just about the hits this time of year it's timely hits. It was a pretty clean game on both sides it was just who capitalized."
On leaving five runners on base...
"That's an opportunity you want to take advantage of, and the game is certainly not over. This team has shown a lot of fight all year, and we've pulled out a lot of games in the fifth sixth and seventh innings so there wasn't any panic or anything like that, but it would've given us a little momentum if we would've been able to push a run or two across the board early."
On their conference tournament...
"We had a great conference tournament, and actually we had a good two weeks leading up to the tournament. We felt like we peaked at the right time, and to survive four elimination games is a real test of our character and how much these kids want to compete. We had good momentum coming into this, I didn't even think we were real nervous. I just think we really need to get some offense and hang some runs on the board."
On competing against larger schools...
"I don't think we were intimidated today at all, I don't think Hofstra is intimidated being here. Look at the score, look at the hits, look at the lines. I think there is a lot of pressure on top seeds at the regionals. We had every reason to be the looser team here, ride some momentum we had out of the America East. We're a young team, we only have one senior. This is going to be a great experience for us."
On the plan for tomorrow's elimination game...
"We specialize in those. We have to score, we have to string hits together, get some momentum offensively, play our good defense and limit the free bases from the circle."
SOPHOMORE P ALLISON CUKROV
On her game tonight...
"Obviously I need to limit the free bases in the future, but I thought the team showed great effort in the field. It's nice when there are very limited errors. I thought it was a good team effort, but we fell short."
On her pitch that became Jenna Marston's homerun...
"It was a drop curve that was flat. But, obviously, the two walks before it didn't help."
SENIOR 2B GINA BIANCULLI
On Nicole Hudson's pitching tonight...
"I saw a lot of slow, down pitching, a lot of out. She went up, but I didn't see so much of a rise ball instead of a fast, high ball. We just didn't capitalize on it, we didn't adjust."
