Columbia Regional - 2013 NCAA Division I Softball Championship
Game Two: Missouri (36-11) 3, Stony Brook (35-24) 0 - Notes
Missouri (1-0 in the NCAA Columbia Regional) earned the 3-0 win over Stony Brook (0-1) in Game Two of the 2013 Columbia Regional and will face Hofstra (1-0) in a winner's bracket game at Noon on Saturday. Stony Brook will face Oregon State (0-1) at 2:30 p.m. in the Regional's first elimination game.
It was the 17th shutout win for Missouri this season and the first since a 3-0 win over Tennessee in the semifinals of the 2013 SEC Championship on May 11. Missouri's last three wins have come by shutouts. It was Stony Brook's 11th loss by shutout of 2013.
Missouri earned its seventh consecutive NCAA Regional game win, a streak that dates back to the 2011 Columbia Regional. Overall Missouri has won 17 of its last 18 NCAA Regional games, with the lone loss coming in 2011.
Nicole Hudson earned the start for Mizzou and improved to 11-5 on the year. Hudson was outstanding, allowing just two hits in the win.
Jenna Marston provided the offensive spark for Mizzou, crushing her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to right-center field to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning. The homer was Marston's first of the season and eighth of her career. It was her first round-tripper since 2011.
The home run was the 60th of 2013 for Missouri, which is tied for fifth all-time in single-season history. The 2009 Tigers also had 60 home runs.
Marston scored the 192nd run of her career, No. 2 all-time at Missouri. Rhea Taylor leads the school annals with 234.
Stony Brook starter Allison Cukrov was just as impressive despite taking the loss. The sophomore fell to 15-15 on the season in her team-leading 28th start of 2013. She allowed just two hits, but a three-run homer by the Tigers in the fifth provided the final margin of victory.
The loss halted a four-game winning streak by the Seawolves. Entering today's game SBU had also won 10 of its last 11 games, all in the month of May.
Stony Brook fell to 0-3 vs. ranked opponents this season. In addition to today's loss vs. Missouri it lost two games to No. 16 Louisville (8-0, 5-0).
