Tennis Hosts Mizzou Invite to Open Fall Action

Sept. 19, 2013

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou tennis team opens fall play this weekend when the team hosts the Mizzou Invite at The Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Sept. 20-22. The Tigers will take on Nebraska, Princeton and Oklahoma State in the event. Admission to the three-day event is free.

The Invite will feature singles and doubles competition but will not be a true tournament format. Instead, two teams will play each other in either singles or doubles each day. After all play is completed and everyone has played each other in both doubles and singles at the end of the tournament, each flight winner will be selected based on best record.

The Tigers enter 2013 with five returners and three newcomers on the roster. Senior Cierra Gaytan-Leach enters the fall ranked as the 72nd singles player in the nation. Additionally, Gaytan-Leach and junior Elisha Gabb clock in at tied for 32nd in the ITA doubles rankings.

Both Gaytan-Leach and Gabb will participate in the upcoming 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. Gaytan-Leach is in Qualifying singles, while she and Gabb made the Qualifying doubles cut. The event will take place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Last season Gaytan-Leach and Gabb were in the pre-qualifying state and just missed advancing to the qualifying round.
