COLUMBIA, Mo. -Fresh off of its season-opening meet last weekend, the Mizzou track and field team will head to Illinois for its first road meet of the 2012 season, the Illinois Classic on Saturday (Jan. 21) at the Illinois Armory. The meet, which features teams from Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Illinois State, SEMO, Tennessee State, Lincoln, Bradley, Northern Illinois and Murray State, will begin at 9 a.m. with the women's weight throw.
This will mark the Tigers' second meet of the season, following last week's Mizzou-Kansas Border Dual at the Hearnes Center. In that meet, the Tigers were led by a dominating performance from the Tiger men, who claimed a 92-85 win over the Jayhawks.
The men were led by a stellar performance from junior Malcolm Pennix (South Bend, Ind.), who claimed a pair of event titles and posted a national-leading mark in the long jump, measuring in at 7.74m (25-4 ¾). That was a new personal-best and placed Pennix third all-time at Mizzou. It is also the Tigers' best indoor long jump mark since Ajay Agbebaku jumped 7.84m (25-8 ¾) in 1974. Not only did Pennix shine in the long jump, but he also won the men's 60m dash at the meet with a time of 6.78, the third-best mark in program history.
Aside from Pennix, the Tiger men have five other individuals ranked among the national top 50 in their events and one relay team after the second weekend of the indoor season. Sophomore Jeremy Lampley (Ballwin, Mo.) teams with Pennix to give the Tigers a pair of elite competitors in the horizontal jumps as he ranks just outside the top 25 in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 14.99m (49-2 ¼), ranking 27th nationally. On the track, milers Dan Quigley (St. Louis, Mo.) and Kyle Rood(St. Peters, Mo.) rank 44th and 46th nationally in the event at 4:10.75 and 4:10.77, respectively, while the men's distance medley relay team ranks 16th nationally with a time of 10:11.95.
A pair of Tiger men also rank 35th in their respective throws events. Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) measured in at 17.21m (56-5 ¾) in the shot put last week, ranking him 35th, while teammate Jacob Bullinger(Jackson, Mo.) sits 35th in the weight throw at 18.40m (60-4 ½).
On the women's side, junior Bailey Belvis(Prosper, Texas) highlights the Tigers as she ranks 44th in the mile run with a time of 4:53.99 while running as a member of the women's distance medley relay team that posted the nation's second-best time so far at 11:35.13 at last week's Mizzou-KU Border Dual.
