Day One
Big 12 Championship Central
COLUMBIA, Mo. - After day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday (May 14), Tiger senior Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) leads the men's decathlon with 4,018 points thanks in large part to a 400m clocking of 48.64, earning him 878 points in the competition. Adcock was in third place before that event, but with his time he has placed himself in a great position heading into the final five events of the competition, which will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Aside from his mark in the 400m dash, Adcock began his day with an 11.10 clocking in the 100m dash, earning him 838 points. He followed that with a long jump of 6.91m (22-8) to add 792 points to his ledger. Moving to the shot put, Adcock measured in at 13.48m (44-2 ¾) and placed second in the decathlon high jump after clearing 2.01m (6-7) to combine for 1,510 points.
Fellow decathlete Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) finished the day in third place with 3,977 points as Kansas State's Mantas Silkauskas was sandwiched between the two Tiger decathletes with 4,011 points, just seven back of Adcock. Just 41 points separate the top three decathletes in the competition. Rise used big marks in the shot put and long jump to put himself in position to make a run at a Big 12 title on Saturday. Rise measured in at 7.14m (23-5 ¼) in the long jump to earn 847 points while his event-best shot put of 15.88m (52-1 ¼) earned him 844 points.
Rise began his day with an 11.36 clocking in the 100m dash to tally 782 points. After the long jump and shot put, Rise cleared 1.89m (6-2 ¼) to earn 705 points and then closed his day with a 50.34 clocking in the 400m dash to earn 799 points.
Senior Lauren Begany (Fenton, Mo.) found herself in seventh place after day one of the women's heptathlon, competing a solid day for the Tiger combined event athletes. Aided by a 100m dash time of 14.74 - which earned her 876 points in the competition - Begany totaled 2,860 points on Friday. She sits just 59 points back of sixth place, which is where she finished at last year's Big 12 Championships.
The Tiger men also had a successful day in the hammer throw as a pair of Tigers - Chris Holly (Topeka, Kan.) and Jacob Bullinger (Jackson, Mo.) - earned All-Big 12 honors. Holly placed fourth in the event with a throw of 59.40m (194-10) while Bullinger placed eighth with a massive personal-best throw of 55.16m (181-0). Bullinger's mark was personal best by nearly 12 feet. For Holly, the All-Big 12 nod is the second of his career as scored in the weight throw at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. For Bullinger, the All-Big 12 honors are the first of his career.
Melissa Coil (Clark, Mo.) earned All-Big 12 status in the women's hammer throw after placing seventh overall with a throw of 53.31m (174-11). Cortni Ervin (Marshall, Mo.) and Megan Collins (Lee's Summit, Mo.) also competed in the hammer throw, placing 12th and 13th, respectively, with marks of 51.20m (168-0) and 51.01m (167-4). Laura Greenfield (Liberty, Mo.) rounded out the Tigers' competitors in the hammer throw as she placed 17th at 46.66m (153-01).
Also competing on the day for Mizzou was Asa Wyatt (Poplar Bluff, Mo.), who finished 12th in the men's javelin with a throw of 60.03m (196-11). Also, Phillip King (Columbia, Mo.) and Kinsey Farren (Dallas, Texas) ran for Mizzou in the men's and women's 10,000m runs, respectively. King finished 19th with a time of 31:13.31 while Farren placed 15th at 37:59.74. Max Storms (Kansas City, Mo.) also ran in the 10,000m run for the Tiger men and clocked in at 32:25.37.
Overall, through three scored events, the Mizzou men currently stand in seventh place overall with six points while the women rank sixth with the two points scored by Coil in the hammer throw. The women only had two events scored on Friday. In all, Iowa State leads the women's competition with 32 points while Nebraska leads the men's competition with 25 points.
Action will resume tomorrow at Walton Stadium with the running of the men's decathlon 110m hurdles, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field and the Big 12 Track & Field Championships, please stay tuned to MUTigers.com
