Omaha, Neb. -
Missouri wrestling will advance senior Maxwell Askren to the finals of the 184-pound weight class Saturday evening. While Askren is no stranger to success at the NCAA's, this will be the, now three-time All-American's, first time reaching the finals.
In a high action first period, LeBlanc struck first, taking Askren down. Askren quickly reversed the takedown, and tied the score at 2. Le Blanc earned a three point nearfall, and when Askren broke loose, he earned a two point nearfall himself. Behind 4-5 entering the second, Askren chose down to begin the period. Earning two escapes and a riding point the match was tied at 7 and entered sudden victory. Askren scored a quick takedown and a 9-7 victory. Askren will farce No. 1 seed Kirk Smith of Boise State in tomorrow evening's finals.
“When I first got in I was buried pretty deep, but I know in the semifinals in an NCAA tournament, there is no time to just let him go. So I have to get into a stalemate, get up, and try again. I had an opportunity and I wasn't going to give it up,” said Askren. “I made the most of it, and that is that.”
Defending National Champion Mark Ellis earned his second All-American honor with a 4-2 decision over No. 10 Rutgers' Dominick Russo in sudden victory. With a scoreless first period, Russo began down in the second and scored the match's first points with an escape. Ellis took the bottom position to begin the third and quickly reversed Russo for two points, Russo escaped tying the score at two. In sudden victory, Ellis earned a takedown and secured his spot among the top-8.
In Ellis' second match of the evening, he took yet another win in SV1, his third of the tournament. Battling Iowa's No. 5 seed Daniel Erekson, each grappler earned just an escape in regulation. Ellis scored a takedown :20 in to take the win, 3-1.
“In heavyweights, it's hard to score. So for him it was hard, but [the win] doesn't surprise me with his pride and character. It's tough to lose as a returning National Champion but him winning those next two matches was big,” said Head Coach Brian Smith. “He is going to win them all, and take third. That's Mark Ellis, he's a champ.”
Redshirt freshman Brent Haynes lost by decision to No. 6 seed Eric Lapotsky of Oklahoma, eliminating the Kansas City, Mo. native from the consolation bracket. Finishing his season 28-15, Haynes recorded an impressionable 3-2 record in his first NCAA appearance.
Missouri holds strong to the tenth place position, with 44 points, while Penn State is in ninth with 47. Iowa State is up to 120.5 points, with Cornell behind at 75.
Ellis will compete in session five Saturday morning against No. 3 seed Zachery Rey of Lehigh. With a win, Ellis will advance to the third-place match. Session five gets underway at 10 a.m. Askren will compete in finals tomorrow night beginning at 6:30 p.m. Finals will be aired live on ESPN, with the session five matches to be aired on ESPNU.
