COLUMBIA, Mo. - The 2010 Mizzou track and field program completed the first day of the 2010 Indoor NCAA Championships on Friday (March 12) inside Randal Tyson Track Complex. After day one, both Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) and Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) stand in the heptathlon top 10, highlighted by Rise who has 3,194 points in the competition which currently ranks him fourth. Adcock finished day one with 3,120 points with his best event - the 60m hurdles - still to come tomorrow and is in ninth place overall. Shannon Leinert (Eureka, Mo.) also ran for the Tigers and posted a time of 2:07.06, just shy of qualifying for tomorrow's finals.
Adcock began his day by earning 840 points in the heptathlon competition by running a time of 7.12 in the 60m dash, placing him 148 points back of the event leader at the time, Ashton Eaton of Oregon. That mark was just shy of his personal-best in the event, which is 7.09. Rise began his day in decent shape as well, running a time of 7.32 to earn 772 points in the overall competition. After the 60m dash, Adcock stood in ninth place while Rise was 15th overall.
The long jump was up next for the combined athletes and Rise shined in the event, placing fourth overall with a jump of 7.12m (23-4 ¼) to earn 842 more points in the team competition. That mark catapulted him from 15th overall to ninth place in the heptathlon with 1,614 points. Adcock also had a fine showing in the event, placing eighth with a leap of 7.05m (23-1 ¾), adding 826 points to his total score. After the first two events, Adcock was in seventh place overall with 1,666 points.
Rise continued his success in the next heptathlon event, the shot put, an event in which he claimed top honors in at the Big 12 Championships. With a throw of 15.82m (51-11) in his second attempt, Rise claimed the event title for the second-straight meet, earning him 840 points in the overall competition, placing him second overall behind Eaton through the first three events. Not to be outdone, Adcock also had a fine showing in the shot put, tossing 14.19m (46-6 ¾), just shy of his personal-best mark, to earn third in the competition and add 795 points to his total. Through three events, Adcock found himself in fifth place overall with 2,406 points.
In the final combined event of the day - the high jump - Rise and Adcock both turned in solid performances once again. Rise cleared 1.93m (6-4) to earn 740 points and finished the day in fourth place overall with 3,194 points. Adcock, who won the heptathlon high jump at the Big 12 Championships, measured in at 1.90m (6-2 ¾). That mark earned him 714 points in the competition and placed him ninth in the heptathlon after the first day.
Leinert was able to run to a third-place finish in her heat with a time of 2:07.06, but it was not quick enough to qualify her for the event finals as the field was one of the toughest at the meet.
Rise and Adcock will continue the combined events tomorrow, which begin with the 60m hurdles at 11 a.m. They will also compete in the pole vault and 1,000m run, which will begin sequentially following the hurdles.
