COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Mizzou track and field program added two more All-Americans to its record books on Saturday as both Nick Adcock (Kansas City, Mo.) and Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) finished in the top five in the heptathlon at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday (March 13). Adcock was the Tigers' top finisher in fourth place with 5,763 points while Rise finished just behind him in fifth with 5,710 total points. The fourth-place finish ties Adcock's best placement at the event as he also earned fourth back in 2008. Rise's fifth-place nod at the Championships is the best of his career and his 5,710 points are a new personal-best for him.
Coming into the day, Adcock stood ninth overall with 3,120 points but he started his day with a great performance in the 60m hurdles, catapulting him back into the top five. Adcock earned 997 points in the event after clocking in at 7.94, his highest point total of any event in the competition. He came back and used a pole vault of 4.70m (15-5) to earn 819 more points, giving him 4,936 points heading into the final event of the day, the 1,000m run. The Tiger senior turned in another great performance in the 1,000m run, finishing just five seconds shy of his personal-best in the event at 2:44.23 to add 827 points to his total score.
For Adcock, the All-America honor and fourth-place overall nod puts a stamp on what was one of the most impressive indoor seasons for any Tiger combined event athlete. He claimed the Big 12 Championship in the heptathlon with a meet and school record point total of 5,938 points, which still ranks him second in the nation in the event. He was also named US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Regional Field Athlete of the Year. The All-America honor is the fourth of Adcock's career.
Rise earned his second All-America distinction with a fifth-place finish on Saturday. He began the day in fourth place overall with 3,194 points after a great first day that saw him claim the heptathlon shot put title with a throw of 15.82m (51-11). That momentum carried over into Saturday's competition as he scored at least 800 points in all three events, highlighted by 872 points in the 60m hurdles after clocking in at 8.45 in the event. He came back and cleared 4.70m (15-5) in the pole vault to add 819 points to his ledger heading into the final event of the day, the 1,000m run. Just as he did in the overall competition, Rise finished just behind Adcock in the event at 2:44.40, earning him 825 points in the event. In all, Rise finished with 5,710 points, topping his previous personal-best heptathlon mark by 62 points.
The pair combined to score nine points in the team competition for the Tigers as they finished 25th overall at the Championships.Only three Big 12 schools - Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas Tech - finished ahead of the Tigers in the overall team competition.
After a week off next weekend, the Tigers will begin the outdoor season at home on March 25-27 with the Audrey Walton Combined Events Carnival and Missouri Relays. For all the latest on Mizzou track and field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com.
