No. 15 Tigers Fall to No. 9 Sooners

The No. 15 Tigers (7-5) fell to the No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners (14-2-1), dropping their first dual of the Big 12 season, 25-10.
In the first match of the night senior defending National Champion Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) took on the Sooners No. 12 Nathan Fernandez. After a quiet first period, Ellis opened a 1-0 lead to begin the second period. Fernandez evened things up in the third period with an escape at 1:05, forcing overtime. Ellis scored two points on a takedown in the sudden victory period to get the victory, 3-1. Ellis is now 18-6 on the season, and enters Senior Day with a 7-0 record in duals.
In a matchup between ranked wrestlers, No. 6 Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) and No. 18 Tyler Caldwell wrestled a tough bout, countering each other's moves through most of the match. Despite Caldwell's efforts, with a third period escape, Marable earned the 8-5 victory.
In the second to last match of the evening No. 3 Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) faced off against Oklahoma's Erich Schmidtke. Askren scored just two points in the first frame, before dominating the second period with three takedowns and an escape, to enter the third period with a 9-3 lead. Keeping the pressure on in the third period, Askren took Schmidtke down one more time, and earned a penalty point to earn a 15-5 win by major decision. The win was Askren's 6th dual win of the season, with his season record at 12-1. It also gave Askren the 96th victory of his career, meaning that the senior needs just four more wins to become the 18th member of the 100-win club, joining teammate Nicholas Marable.
The Tigers take on No. 3 Oklahoma State at home tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Hearnes Center. The final home meet of the season, the University will recognize seniors Maxwell Askren, Mark Ellis, and Nicholas Marable on Senior Day.
