Gold Strikes First in Fall World Series

The Gold team took the opener of Mizzou Baseball's Fall World Series by a score of 7-1 on Wednesday night at Taylor Stadium. Senior Andrew Thigpen, junior Garrison McLagan, sophomore Brannon Champagne and freshman Dillon Everett each had two hits for the Gold squad.

Gold was out-hit 12-11 on the night, but the Black team left 13 runners on base in defeat.

After two scoreless innings, each team put a run on the board in the third. The Gold team's run came on back-to-back hits by Champagne and Blake Brown. The Black squad tied the score when senior Ryan Ampleman tripled, then scored on a ground out by sophomore Eric Garcia.

Gold then put together a three-run top of the fourth inning, which included a leadoff single by McLagan and doubles from Thigpen and junior Ben Turner.

The Gold team added three more runs in the seventh inning, getting one on a triple off the bat of Champagne, who then scored on a balk. After a double from sophomore Scott Sommerfeld, McLagan tripled to center to drive in the third run of the inning.

Freshman Rob Zastryzny picked up the win for Gold, as he allowed just one run on seven hits in five innings pitched. He struck out three. Freshman Matt Stites, senior Kelly Fick and senior Kevin Mahler teamed up to pitch four scoreless innings in relief.

Junior Conner Mach was 4-for-4 for the Black team.

Game two of the Fall World Series is Thursday with first pitch set for 6 p.m. at Taylor Stadium. Admission is free to all of the FWS games.
