Mizzou Earns Doubles Point But Falls To Texas, 5-2

Austin, Texas - The 62-ranked Missouri women's tennis team (7-9, 3-5 Big 12) finished it's toughest road-stint of the season against the 32-ranked Texas Longhorns (12-5, 8-0 Big 12) on Sunday. Though the Tigers picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, Jamie Mera picked up the only Missouri victory at No. 2. Play began at noon in Austin at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
The Longhorns picked up the first win in doubles play as Caroline Larsson and Stephanie Davison defeated Missouri's Jessica Giuggioli and Kaitlyn Ritchie, 8-5. The No. 3 match finished next, this time with the Tigers on top. Sofia Ayala and Danielle Day racked up an 8-5 win before Mallory Weber and Jamie Mera picked up their biggest victory of the season to date. The Tiger's top pair sealed the doubles point with a win at No. 1 over 25th-ranked doubles partners Marija Milic and Vanja Corovic, 9-7.
Texas racked up five singles victories before Mera earned Missouri's lone singles win. After Mera dropped her first set to Larsson at No. 2 she went on to force a tie-breaker with a second-set victory. Mera sealed up the win in the tie-breaker, 10-6.
"We competed a lot better today than we did yesterday," said coach Blake Starkey. "The games were very long, the scores are a little deceptive. We had so many opportunities, but came up just short. Jamie (Mera) played very well today. I can't be disappointed with the way our girls played today."
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 11, when they host the Colorado Buffaloes. Play will begin at noon at the Green Tennis Center in Columbia.
