COLUMBIA, Mo. - On the final day of the 2009 Jefferson Cup, the Missouri Tigers and the Virginia Cavaliers battled to the wire, but in the end Missouri's 12 winners on the day was enough for both the men and women's squads to take the meet team titles Saturday Afternoon.
The men's team won six of the nine events Saturday in the 107-93 Tiger victory, while the women's squad also took six of the nine events in their 105-95 victory. This is the first time that one school has taken both team titles, in last year's dual, the Missouri men took the team title while the Virginia women took the other.
Chris Rohr took the spotlight early in the day breaking both the facility and meet record in hammer throw with his toss of 229 feet, 8 inches (70.01 meters), which also happens to be the best in the nation so far this year. The next closest competitor was the freshman Tim Opfer who threw 160 feet, 9 inches (49.01 meters).
The tandem of Krishna Lee and Elisha Hunt finished first and second in an event twice on Saturday and in the same event again this year, where in the women's shot put, with Lee taking the title with a throw of 53 feet, 3.50 inches, and Hunt coming in second with a throw of 45 feet, 6.50 inches.
In the women's hammer throw, Lee set a meet record with a throw of 203 feet, 8 inches (62.09 meters) putting her first, while Hunt's throw of 187 feet, 11 inches (57.29 meters) placed her second.
Both men and women Missouri relay teams took the 4x400 titles as the men's team finished in a time of 3:14.30 and the women's team finished in a time of 3:45.82.
Stacy Swineburg took her second individual women's high jump championship of the outdoor season, jumping 5 feet, 5 inches (1.65 meters), followed by Meghan Brougher who finished second.
Leslie Farmer became a two-event champion with her first place finish in the women's 400-meter dash, finishing in 56.55 seconds, while Blossom Nwaneri took third finishing in 57.29 seconds.
Brian Graybill set a personal record in the men's mile, finishing first in a time of 4:09.32, while Tim Cornell finished in a close second running 4:09.56.
Garett Jeffries stormed back in the men's 3000-meter run, overtaking Ryan Collins of Virginia and setting a meet record in the process, finishing with a time of 8:22.90.
Kaela Rorvig had the winning long jump on her second attempt, jumping 19 feet, 5.25 inches (5.92 meters), with JaNay Woolridge finished second with a jump of 18 feet, 9 inches (5.71 meters)
Nick Adcock took first in the only heat of the men's 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.14 seconds, while Lars Rise finished third in the event with 15.07 seconds.
Brian Hancock's leap of 16 feet, .75 inches (4.90 meters) was good enough for first place in the men's pole vault. Hancock was followed by Steve Shimkus who finished second clearing 15 feet, 7 inches earning three points in the event.
