Tigers Move to Seventh in Team Standings

March 20, 2009

Jordan Bout  | Ellis Bout  | NCAA Championships Central

St. Louis, Mo. - The combined efforts of four Missouri wrestlers assisted in propelling the Tiger squad to seventh in the team standings at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships held at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.  Three Missouri grapplers, Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.), Maxwell Askren (Hartland, Wis.) and Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) have locked up All-America honors, and will compete in the live televised semifinals at 174-, 197-pounds and heavyweight beginning at 6 p.m. (CT) tonight on ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN360.

For the fifth time in six years, the Tigers will return home on Sunday with at least three All-Americans.  The Missouri wrestling team first achieved this feat in 2004, repeating the accomplishment in 2005, 2007 and again in 2008.  The All-America accolades are the second of Jordan and Askren's career and the first of three-time NCAA qualifier Ellis.

Two All-Americans, Jordan and Jay Borschel of Iowa, met in the quarterfinals of the 174 pound bracket.  Avenging a loss to the Hawkeye from the semifinals of the Midlands, Jordan came out strong scoring a takedown 41 seconds into the match.  Jordan chose down to start the second and escaped for the 3-1 lead.  Borschel started down in the third and escaped in five seconds scoring his only point of the match.  The Tiger grappler was hit with stalling with three seconds remaining on the clock, but collected the win to make his second straight NCAA semifinals appearance.

Askren blanked third-seeded Brent Chriswell of Boise State, 3-0 at 197 pounds and will compete in the semifinals against No. 2 seed Jake Varner of Iowa State.  The All-American Missouri wrestler broke the scoreless tie in the second period after choosing down and reversing Chriswell with 44 seconds on the clock.  Askren held Chriswell down in the third period and accumulated 1:32 of riding time for the additional point.

Ellis, Missouri's first three-time NCAA qualifier to compete at heavyweight, held on for a narrow, one point win over Derek Erekson of Iowa, 6-5.  Much to the chagrin of the black and gold clad Iowa fans, Ellis managed an escape with 12 seconds remaining in the match to take the lead and win.  Ellis scored first with a takedown in the first three minutes of action, adding an escape in the second, as well as a takedown and two escapes in the third.

Wrestling in the consolation bracket of the 165 pound weight class, junior Nicholas Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) won two matches in the morning session, including a double overtime bout with Nebraska's Stephen Dwyer, 7-5.  The third meeting of the season between the two Big 12 opponents, Marable won the match with a reversal and two back points in the final seconds of the fourth tie breaker.

Taking on defending National Champion Jordan Leen at 157 pounds, senior Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) was forced to the consolation bracket after dropping a 4-2 decision.  The two competitors were scoreless for nearly five minutes before Leen escaped at the buzzer for the 1-0 advantage.  Leen came up with a takedown in the third to secure his second win over Chandler this season.

Sophomore Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) and senior Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) were eliminated from contention after dropping their must win matches in the morning session.
