Troy, N.Y. - The fifth-ranked Missouri wrestling team held off No. 20 Old Dominion, 29-9, earning wins in seven weight classes in the opening round of the Northeast Duals contested on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
Opening the morning at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Troy Dolan (Blairsvile, Pa.), suffered a 3-0 loss to fourth-ranked James Nicholson putting Missouri down in the team points. The Tigers rattled off four straight wins to take a 16-3 lead over the Monarchs.
Missouri sophomore Todd Schavrien (Poway, Calif.) started the Tigers on its four match win streak, upsetting 11th-ranked Kyle Hutter, 8-4, at 133 pounds. Senior Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) followed win a 7-4 decision over 10th-ranked Ryan Williams at 141 pounds.
Among Missouri victories was senior Andrew Sherry's (Sewickley, Pa.) fall in 2:04 over opponent Joey Metzler in the 149 pound weight class. With the win, Sherry improves to 3-1 on the season. The fall was one of two recorded by Tiger grapplers in the battle with Old Dominion. Junior heavyweight Mark Ellis (Peculiar, Mo.) recorded a fall in 4:18 in the final bout of the contest, his seventh win of the season by pin.
Senior captains Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) and Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) both earned wins in their respective weight class, 157 and 174 pounds, by major decision. Chandler, ranked as high as seventh in the nation, bested Kaylen Baxter, 10-2, while Jordan shut down Derek Coffey, 13-3.
Tiger junior Maxwell Askren (Hartland., Wis.) recorded the sixth Missouri win of the morning, with a 7-3 victory over Jesse Strawn at 197 pounds.
Competing at 165 pounds, No. 1 ranked Nicholas Marable suffered an upset by 13th-ranked Monarch Chris Brown. Marable, now 2-2 on the season, went into this third overtime bout of the season, but dropped the match, 2-1.
