Columbia, Mo. –The Missouri softball team released its 2009 schedule Monday afternoon. Included in the 52-game schedule are 20 home games and nine contests against teams that played in 2008 NCAA post-season action.
The Tigers will open their season at the Georgia State Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., running Feb. 14 and 15. One of four teams set to play in the two-day tournament, Missouri will begin action Saturday, Feb. 14, at 9 a.m. (CT) against Evansville before taking on 2008 Women's College World Series (WCWS) squad Virginia Tech at 1:30 p.m. (CT). Missouri will play host school Georgia State at 11:15 a.m. (CT) on Feb. 15 with the Championship Game set for 3:45 p.m. (CT).
The Georgia State Tournament is one of five tournaments that the Tigers will compete in throughout the course of the season. Missouri will play in the Florida Atlantic Tournament (Feb. 20-22), the San Diego State Tournament (Feb. 27-March 1), the All-Missouri Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament (March 6-8) and the Coastal Carolina Tournament (March 13-15). Over the course of the five tournaments, Missouri will take on 18 teams representing 12 different conferences.
The 2008 NCAA Regional Champion Tiger softball team will square off with nine squads that advanced into the 64-team NCAA bracket last season. Of the nine competitors, five teams, Houston, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and UCLA all advanced to the NCAA Super Regional Tournament. Three teams, Big 12 opponent Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and UCLA were competitors in the 2008 WCWS.
Big 12 action gets underway against Texas at home on University Field, Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m. (CT). Missouri will host five league squads in 2009 including Texas A&M (April 4-5), Iowa State (April 22), Oklahoma (April 25-26) and Nebraska (May 2-3).
Missouri's first home game of 2009 will be against St. Louis University in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader, set for Feb. 25. All home games will be played on University Field unless otherwise noted.
The 2009 Big 12 Tournament will once again run at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. A three-day, single elimination tournament, May 8-10, the Tigers look to claim the programs second-ever Big 12 title.
