Columbia, Mo. - The Mizzou women's tennis team is preparing for a full slate of spring competition. The Tigers are coming off a successful fall campaign where several freshmen captured tournament titles in both singles and doubles. Senior Chrissy Svetlic and freshman Mallory Weber will begin the dual match season ranked No. 43 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings. The duo put together a 5-1 fall campaign that included two tournament titles.
The Tigers will take on 13 nationally ranked squads that will include three Big Ten squads (Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin), one SEC team (Arkansas), one Big East team (Syracuse), and the always challenging Big 12. Most of this will be on the road in 2008. The Tigers expect to start three freshmen, one sophomore, one junior, and one senior.
"A big goal of ours is to get Mizzou back to the NCAA tournament," said Coach Blake Starkey.
"This is a good squad with great chemistry. We're young, but I've seen a lot of fight in this group, and we've got great character. It is going to be exciting for our fans to watch this particular Mizzou team grow and develop and hopefully take advantage of the opportunities in front of us."
Those opportunities begin quickly as the Tigers first match will be on the road at No. 53 Arkansas on Jan. 26th. Arkansas currently features the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation, Aurelija Miseviciute.
