COLUMBIA, Mo.-- -
Mizzou evened the series with Kansas by holding on for an 8-7 win on Saturday at Taylor Stadium. The win came after a two-hour delay due to heavy rain in Columbia. Junior Evan Frey drove in five runs and hit his first career home run and sophomore Rick Zagone improved to 5-0 on the year.
Missouri trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, when Frey connected for a three-run shot over the right filed wall to pull MU ahead. Frey finished 3-for-6 with five RBI. He drove in a run on a single in the second and picked up an RBI with a single in the third.
Senior Gary Arndt also recorded a three-hit night, finishing 3-for-4, which included an RBI double in the sixth inning.
The Tigers led by three heading to the ninth and after two KU runs, the Tigers squashed the Jayhawk comeback attempt as junior Scooter Hicks got Eric Snowden to fly out, stranding the tying run at second base.
Zagone pitched seven innings and has turned in at least seven innings in six of his eight starts this season for Mizzou. He allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out four.
Hicks picked up the save, his first of his career at Mizzou, as he came on to face the final hitter.
The three-game series will wrap up at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Taylor Stadium. For tickets, call 1-800-CAT PAWS (884-PAWS in Columbia) or go online to mutigers.com.
