West Point, NY - The University of Missouri women's tennis team defeated Army, 6-1, Sunday in New York to improve to 6-8 on the spring. The Tigers finish their two-match road trip at 1-1 as they lost to Syracuse Saturday.
Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey said the Black Knights provided a good test for the Tigers, despite the 6-1 score.
"I've got a lot of respect for them they're in great shape."
There was a time when the match was close, as Dunham and McKenzie each lost their first set before coming back to earn victories, and cement Mizzou's sixth victory of the spring. But all in all, Starkey said, "today was a good day."
The Tigers started the day off on a good note by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. At No. 2, Raquel Wagner and Katelyn McKenzie downed Sarah Giles-Madden and Jessica Shurtz, 8-5. At No. 3, Kaitlin Dunham and Chrissy Svetlic beat Kristin Beehler and Paige Ford, 8-6. Erika Josbena and Amanda Pratzel lost a close match at No. 1, 9-7, to Niki Flach and Brooke Jones.
Mizzou then moved into singles action, where they only needed three wins to earn a match victory, they got five.
At No. 1, Pratzel defeated Flach, 6-2, 7-6, to earn her second win at No. 1 singles this spring. She is now 7-7 after 14 matches at No. 1 and No. 2 in the spring.
Svetlic earned her sixth victory of the spring, and her team-leading 17th of the season, by dominating Giles-Madden in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. This marks the first Tiger singles win of the season by a 6-0, 6-0 mark, and it is the first shutout of Svetlic's Mizzou career.
Dunham earned a come-from-behind victory over Kristin Beehler at No. 4 singles. After losing the first set, 6-1, Dunham came back to win the second, 6-4, and she took the momentum into the 10-point tie-break played in place of a third set, where she won the tie-break, 10-5, to win the match.
McKenzie accomplished almost the same feat at No. 5 against Diana Alquero. After losing the first set, 6-0, she came back to win the second, 6-4, and the tiebreak, 10-3, to earn her seventh victory of the spring and 16th overall.
At No. 6, Charlotte Bellis earned a straight-set victory over Paige Ford, winning the first set, 6-4, before shutting out Ford in the second, 6-0, to earn her fourth victory of the spring. She is now 3-1 in dual matches. Bellis' win was the Tigers' fourth point of the day, clinching the match for Mizzou.
Brooke Jones defeated MU senior Erika Josbena at No. 2 to give the Black Knights their only point of the day.
After enjoying a night in New York City, The Tigers will come back to Big 12 land to prepare for the rest of their conference schedule. Mizzou will face Texas Tech and Baylor Mar. 31 and April 1, before returning to the Green Tennis Center for four matches in a row to close out the regular season. The Tigers still have Kansas, Iowa State, Wichita State and Texas at home.
