COLUMBIA, Mo.— University of Missouri student-athletes Jeff Wolfert (football) and Maddie Schueler (women's cross country / track and field) are this week's Lathrop & Gage Varsity M Student-Athletes of the Week for their exceptional contributions to their respective athletic teams, combined with their strengths in the classroom and time spent in the local community.
Wolfert, a native of Overland Park, Kan., is the Tiger football team's placekicker. Originally, a diver on the men's swimming and diving team, Wolfert has become one of the best kickers in the Big 12. In 2006, Wolfert was given honorable mention on the All-Big 12 team for his string of 53-consective made placekicks last year. In addition, This season, Wolfert is the team's leading scorer (65), having made 10-of-14 field goals and 35-of-35 PATs. In his career, Wolfert is a perfect 71-of-71 in PAT attempts.
Wolfert carries a 3.42 GPA as a plant sciences major and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 and Big 12 Commissioners' Honor Roll last season.
The Tigers, nationally ranked 13th in the BCS Standings and both Associated Press and USA Today Coaches' Polls, will host Iowa State on Saturday with kickoff at 1 p.m.
Schueler, a native of Louisville, Ky., runs on the women's cross country and track and field teams. In 2005, Schueler was the Tigers' third scorer at the Big 12 Cross Country Championships and the team's fifth scorer at the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships.
As a journalism major, Schueler carries a 3.99 GPA and has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 and Big 12 Commissioners' Honor Roll several times in her career.
The Tiger cross country teams will compete in the Big 12 Championships on October 26 in Lubbock, Texas.
