Nicholls Advances to NCAA Women Shot Put Final

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--Members of the Missouri track and field teams competed Thursday in day two of the NCAA Championships held in Sacramento. Junior school-record holder Shernelle Nicholls will advance to Saturday's finals in the women's shot put, having finished in the preliminary round's top 12.

 

Nicholls marked 51-11 (15.82m) on her second of three attempts to place 12th in the round.

 

Sophomore Krishna Lee (Kansas City, Mo.) threw 50-8 (15.44m) in the same event to place just outside qualifying at 14th place. Yesterday, Lee qualified for Friday morning's hammer throw final.

 

Junior Trisa Nickoley finished 15th in the semifinal round of the women's 800 with a 2:07.96 clocking. Nickoley will have to wait to see if her season's best of just over 2:05 awards her a spot in the upcoming USATF Championships to happen in Indianapolis in two weeks.

 

Senior Bjorn Sommerfeldt concluded the men's decathlon today, finishing in 18th overall. In his final competition as a Tiger, making his third appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Sommerfeldt on day two ran the 110-meter hurdles in 16.09, threw the discus 135-0, pole vaulted to 14-5¼, threw the javelin 167-4, and ran the 1500 meters in 4:42.35.

 

In the men's shot, senior Bill Hobson (Katy, Texas) marked 55-9¼ (17.00m) to place 23rd in his second NCAA appearance.

 

Friday's action for Mizzou will only see Krishna Lee competing in the women's hammer throw final. Nicholls will throw in the women's shot put final on Saturday morning which will appear live on CBS starting at Noon (CT).
