Former Mizzou golfer John Kelly carded an 84 on Friday in the second round of the 107th United State Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. and missed the cut, as his two-round total of 158 was eight shots behind the cut line. He finished fifth among the amateurs entered in the field.
Kelly, who shot a four-over-par 74 on Thursday, made a birdie on the ninth hole but finished with a 42 on the front nine. He matched that with a 42 on the back nine.
Course conditions proved much more difficult on Friday as compared to Thursday's opening round. The average score for the field on Friday was 76.93 and leader Angel Cabrera is even par and is the only player in the field not over par after two rounds.
Kelly, who qualified for the U.S. Open with his runner-up finish at last summer's U.S. Amateur Championship, finished his four-year career at the University of Missouri this spring.
