Columbia, Mo. - The Missouri softball team (9-6) took its third win of the season over UMKC (0-3) in game one of the Clarion Inn Lady'Back Invitational at Lady'Back Park in Fayetteville, Ark. Sophomore pitcher Megan Dennis (Liberty, Mo.) made her third start in the circle and improved to 3-1 on the season, sitting down the first three Kangaroo batters she faced. The Tiger righty forced 12 groundouts before being relieved by freshman Alaina Jacobson (Crocker, Mo.) in the seventh.
The Tigers won its fourth game of the season in which they put the first run on the board. Managing one run in the bottom of the first, leadoff batter senior Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) reached base on balls and advanced to second on sophomore shortstop Andee Allen's (Barnhart, Mo.) groundout to second base. Bowers stole third and scored on junior first baseman Amanda Renth's (Mascoutah, Ill.) groundout to third.
Missouri collected seven runs on 11 hits to win the game. Three Tigers hit for extra bases, with seniors Sarah Stringer (Auxvasse, Mo.) and Alli Kennewell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) ripping back-to-back standup doubles in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Redshirt junior Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas), 2-for-3 at the plate, recorded two of Missouri's three stolen bases on the day and drove in one Missouri run with her fifth inning single to right field. The run was one of two scored in the fifth and sent Allen in from second base. Earlier in the inning, leadoff batter Bowers singled and scored on Allen's double to center field.
All-time Missouri now leads UMKC, 45-1.
Missouri will take on Colorado State in game two of the Clarion Inn Lady'Back Invitational beginning at 11:15 a.m. (CT). Day two of the three day tournament is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. (CT) for the Tigers as they take on host school Arkansas.
