COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams sit in second and third place, respectively, after the first day of the Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championships at the Student Rec Center Natatorium on the Texas A&M campus.
MU came out a little lethargic in the 200 men's and women's medley relays as the team attempted to gets is energy back following Tuesday's travel from Columbia that included three canceled flights and didn't see the team arrive at their hotel until 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The MU men still swam the second-fastest 200 medley relay time in school history to finish third. The Tigers more than made up for the "slow" start in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of Dylan Lynn, Bennett Clark, Gilad Kaufman and Matt Dahlke raced to a second-place finish in a school-record time of 6:36.40. That time was also an NCAA "B" cut.
"The 800 free was a great relay as we broke the school record," MU Head Coach Brian Hoffer said. "Bennett (Clark) went very fast and anchored with Matt Dahlke on it so we had four underclassmen which made it very encouraging. We looked better in the 800 relays than the medleys."
The women's races were much the same as the men with MU swimming well in the medley before kicking it up a notch for their own school record in the 800 free relay. The Tigers' time of 7:22.55 earned them third in the event and bested the previous mark which was set at last year's Big 12 Championships.
Again the grouping for Mizzou was made up of four non-seniors in Lori Halvorson, Colleen Gordon, Jill Granger and Carly Sullivan. Their time was also an NCAA "B" cut.
Individual action will get underway Thursday morning with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and championship finals at 6 p.m. Men's one-meter diving prelims will begin at 9 a.m. with the finals at 5 p.m.
