Falcon Heights, Minn. - The University of Missouri men's and women's cross country teams finished fourth (122 points) and sixth (205 points), respectively at the NCAA Midwest Region Championships Saturday. The races were hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, a suburb of the Twin Cities.
Tiger Head Coach Jared Wilmes was pleased with the total team effort Saturday.
"Everybody stepped up, everybody had a good race."
No. 13 Illinois won the women's 6k race with 44 points. Sixth-ranked Minnesota finished second in the women's race, joining Illinois with an automatic birth to the NCAA Championships. No. 23 Iowa finished third.
No. 23 Oklahoma State (72 points) and No. 20 Kansas (88 points) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's 10k. No. 28 Iowa finished third with 121 points, one less than the Tigers' 122.
The Tiger men finished ahead of fellow Big 12 member Iowa State, who finished fifth, and host and 15th-ranked Minnesota, who finished sixth.
The NCAA will select 13 additional teams to compete in the National Championships. The teams will be announced Sunday, November 12. Individually, the top four runners not on an advancing team qualified for the national race.
On the men's side, several Mizzou runners had great days at the Midwest race. Tiger senior Tim Ross (Alto, Mich.) finished fifth overall with a time of 30:54.84. Tiger freshman Dan Hedgecock (St. Louis, Mo.) finished second for the Tigers and 16th overall with a time of 31:21.54. This was Hedgecock's first second place team finish of the season. Sophomore Garett Jeffries (Clarkson Valley, Mo.) finished only four spots behind Hedgecock in 20th place with a time of 31:24.99. Ross, Hedgecock and Jeffries earned All-Midwest Region Honors for their efforts.
Seniors Tipper O'Brien (Kirkwood, Mo.) and Colten Green (Roach, Mo.) finished 41st and 42nd, respectively. Billy Bell (Chesterfield, Mo.) finished 57th overall. Tim Cornell (Columbia, Mo.) finished 71st overall.
Individually for the Mizzou women, Senior Amanda Bales (Bettendorf, Iowa) led the Tigers with a 16th place finish with a time of 21:34.12. Tiger junior Kate Greer (Marshalltown, Iowa) finished second for Mizzou and 25th overall. She finished the 6k in 21:51.72. Greer finished either first or second for the Tigers in every race this season. Bales and Greer earned All-Region Honors for finishing in the top-25.
Sophomore Ellen Ries (Ryan, Iowa) had another consistent finish. She finished 41st overall and third on the team with a time of 22:12.02. After winning the Missouri Cross Country Challenge, Ries finished third for the Tigers in the rest of the season's races.
