Tulsa, Okla. - Three University of Missouri women's tennis players competed in the ITA Central Championships qualifying draw Wednesday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two of the Tigers three qualifiers advanced to the main singles draw. Freshman Katelyn McKenzie and Junior Chrissy Svetlic will join Erika Josbena, Raquel Wagner and Amanda Pratzel in the main singles draw Thursday.
The Central Region is divided into East and West Divisions for the fall tournament. The Tigers are competing in the East Division Championships on the campus of the University of Tulsa. The West Division Championships are taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah.
McKenzie defeated Oklahoma's Anne Carter in the first round. In the second round, the big serving McKenzie defeated host Tulsa's Julie Westfall. Svetlic continues her solid fall as she beat one of Saint Louis University's top players Tara Grant in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, she defeated Kansas State's Natasha Viera, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (11-9). Svetlic fought off 6 match points to win the match in the third set tiebreak. Svetlic is now11-3 in the fall. Junior Charlotte Bellis won her first round match over Oral Roberts' Taylor Pippin before falling to University of Arkansas-Little Rock's Patricia Cortez in the final qualifying round.
Tiger duos McKenzie and Wagner, Josbena and Pratzel and Svetlic and Bellis will participate in the doubles tournament, which start Thursday. Josbena and Pratzel are 10-6 in the fall, with two championships, the Billiken Invitational and the Gopher Invitational, under their belt.
