Columbia, Mo. - Closing out the fall season with an afternoon game against Johnson County Community College, the Missouri softball team held off the Cavaliers, 7-1, through seven innings of action.
The Tigers jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hitting from the three-hole, redshirt junior Micaela Minner (Sanger, Texas), connected on the first hit of the day, a single to centerfield. After stealing back-to-back bases, Minner scored on junior Amanda Renth's (Mascoutah, Ill.) single.
Missouri tacked on three runs in the bottom of the third inning, tallying three hits including a Sara Simons (Kearney, Mo.) standup double to left field. Leadoff batter senior Leanne Bowers (Arnold, Mo.) reached first after drawing four balls, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. With Simons at the plate, Bowers scored Missouri's second run of the game on the first of two extra base hits. Minner, 2-for-4 on the day, notched her second hit, a single to right field in the third inning and successfully stole her third bag, scoring Renth's second single of the day up the middle. Simons also advanced home on Renth's knock.
With two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, senior Alli Kennewell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) ripped a double to drive in two runs advancing home on an error for the seventh and final run of the game.
Freshman lefty Jana Hainey (Raymore, Mo.) twirled five innings of work, striking out three and forcing three flyouts. Teammate Alana Jacobson provided relief in the fifth, striking out three batters in three innings of work.
