Cedar Falls, Iowa - Following the recipe that earned the team a victory over Kent State, the No. 9 Missouri wrestling program edged No. 8 Iowa State 21-18 to ensure itself a place among the top eight teams at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.
Senior Austin DeVoe (Columbus, Kan.), the No. 16 grappler at 125 pounds, started the match off well for the Tigers, taking down Ben Hanisch in the first period and scoring again on a reversal at the beginning of the second to establish a lead. Hanisch kept the match close, but another reversal by DeVoe earned the Tigers' senior a 6-3 victory.
Ranked No. 16 at 133 pounds and one of three Tigers to win all three matches on the day, sophomore Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) kept the momentum going with an 8-3 win over No. 17 Jesse Sundell, allowing the Cyclone only escapes in giving Missouri a 6-0 lead after the first two bouts.
After the Cyclones took the next three matches, No. 4 Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) wasted no time dispatching of Dane Kuper, pinning his opponent with 19 seconds left in the first period. Pushing the pace to open the match, Pell jumped out to an early lead with a pair of takedowns, then nearly pinned his opponent with about a minute to go. After adjusting his hold, Pell pushed Kuper's shoulders to the mat, giving the Tigers much-needed bonus points at 165 pounds.
Undefeated junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) stretched the Missouri lead to 17-9, winning by technical fall over David Bertolino as time expired. Dominating the match throughout, Askren took Bertolino down seven times, scored two nearfalls, and rode his opponent for almost four minutes on the way to the victory.
Facing a chance to put the Tigers out of reach for the second straight dual, redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) came through with a 13-5 major decision over Joe Curran. Needing just one more takedown to give the Tigers a seven point lead with one match to go, Jordan got two points with three seconds left, ensuring that Missouri would move on the next round.
The Tigers face No. 6 Iowa next, setting up a showdown between Askren, the No. 1 grappler at 174 pounds, and Mark Perry, the No. 3 wrestler in their weight class.
