Cedar Falls, Iowa - Wrestling for a chance to compete for fifth place at the NWCA National Duals, the No. 9 Missouri Tigers fell 31-12 to No. 6 Iowa. Redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) upset the No. 2 wrestler at 197 pounds, Iowa's Paul Bradley.
Jordan, who upset No. 14 Alex Camargo of Kent State earlier in the day, earned a 5-4 decision over Bradley, who is a two-time All-American. Bradley scored first with a takedown, but Jordan was able to escape his hold and get two points by taking Bradley down right before the end of the second period. Bradley chose down to start the third period, and promptly escaped, which gave him a one-point edge since he had over a minute in riding time. With time running down Bradley took a shot, but Jordan countered the move for a takedown of his own with three seconds on the clock, giving the Tigers' freshman the upset.
Junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.), the No. 1 wrestler in the nation at 174 pounds, earned Missouri's only bonus points of the dual, pinning Ben Stedman in 2:09. The win gives Askren 96 victories in his career, just four away from joining the 100-win club as the only Tiger to ever reach the mark as a junior. Askren broke his own Missouri record for falls in a season by pinning his Arizona State opponent, erasing the old mark of 20. The fall over Stedman was Askren's 22nd of the campaign.
A victor in all four matches he wrestled on the day, junior Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) picked up Missouri's first team points at 165, beating Eric Luedke 6-3. Ranked No. 4 in the nation at 165 pounds, Pell countered a single-leg attempt by his Hawkeye opponent midway through the first period, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period. Choosing down to open the next two minutes, Pell scored again on a reversal after fifteen seconds. Staying in control for over half the regulation seven minutes, Luedke managed a reversal late in the third, but an escape by Pell and 4:04 of riding time gave the Missouri junior a 6-3 decision.
Missouri will end the tournament in the same way it began, facing off against No. 18 Arizona State at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the UNI Dome. The Sun Devils won the first matchup, outscoring the Tigers 24-21.
