St. Louis, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's tennis team performed well at the first day of the Billiken Fall Classic Friday in St. Louis. Tiger singles players won six of their eight matches, including wins by Amanda Pratzel and Erika Josbena in the A Draw. In doubles action, the duo of Pratzel and Josbena advanced to Saturday's championship match.
Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey was pleased with his team's performance.
"Today was a solid day. We had some good singles matches, and it's just nice to get out there and compete."
The singles portion of the tournament includes four draws, A, B, C and D. Each draw has a winner's and a consolation bracket. The second round will be played Saturday morning, and the event is scheduled to end Saturday night. The doubles bracket includes 16 teams. It also has a winner's and a consolation bracket. The doubles championship is scheduled for Saturday morning.
In singles play, Josbena won her A Draw match against Eastern Illinois' Natalie Martin, 4-6, 6-3 (10-7). Josbena faces Saint Louis' Amanda Hellberg in the second round on Saturday. St. Louis native Amanda Pratzel also won her match in the A Draw, defeating Arkansas' Rachel Wilhelm, 6-1, 6-1. Pratzel faces Eastern Illinois' Sandra Sasidharan on Saturday.
In the B Draw Missouri junior Chrissy Svetlic defeated Eastern Illinois' Hayley Homburg, 6-3, 6-1, while freshman Katelyn McKenzie lost her match against Eastern's Madina Mambetova, 7-5, 6-4.
St. Louis native Raquel Wagner defeated Saint Louis University's Tara Grant, 6-3, 6-7 (10-8), in the C Draw. Also in C Draw action, junior Charlotte Bellis beat SLU's Rachel McCullagh, 7-5, 6-2.
Mizzou freshman Kaitlin Dunham won her first collegiate match by defeating Allison Dobbins of Saint Louis, 6-4, 6-0, in D Draw action, and Tiger sophomore Stephanie Johns fell to Illinois State's Matea Simovic, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, the duo of Pratzel and Josbena advanced to the finals against the Saint Louis duo of Katerina Lozanova and Grant. Pratzel and Josbena defeated SLU's Hellberg and Ana Renda, 8-4, in the semifinals.
Newcomers McKenzie and Wagner advanced to the semifinals before falling to Lozanova and Grant, 8-6. Svetlic and Bellis won their first round match, but lost to Lozanova and Grant in the second round.
The Tigers will finish the Billiken Classic Saturday and return home to prepare for the Minnesota Invitational on Sept. 15-17.
