COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri women's soccer team used two second half goals to record a 2-2 tie against No. 22 Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday afternoon in the Tigers only preseason game.
Sophomore Ashley Hamblin scored the Mizzou's two goals in a minute span to tie the game and allow Missouri to come away with a tie to get ready for the season opener next Friday.
In the 66th minute, freshman Bree Thornton intercepted a ball in the Commodore end and took off toward goal. She dribbled around a defender and crossed the ball to Hamblin, who turned around a defender and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the goal from six yards out for a 2-1 game.
One minute later, Hamblin struck again. She dribbled the ball down the left sideline and into the box, faked out the Vanderbilt goalie, and easily tapped the ball into the net to tie the score a 2-2.
The Commodores took advantage for a corner in the 21st minute to take an early 1-0 lead as Lea Lafield placed a perfect pass to the far post, where Susan McAleavey headed the ball into the back of the net.
Vanderbilt added to its lead in the 54th minute on a when Amy Wilcox took a 27-yard shot near the left goal line that sailed just over the outstretched hands of Tiger goalie, sophomore Mallory Forst, and into the top netting.
On offensive onslaught by the Commodores in the waning minutes kept the Missouri defense on edge but Forst and the backline held strong to preserve the 2-2 score.
Forst made 12 saves in the game.
Missouri officially opens the 2006 season on Friday, Aug. 25 against Iowa in the Mizzou's Tiger Invitational. The Tigers and the Hawkeyes will take the field at 7:30 following the first game of the tournament against Illinois and South Carolina. Missouri continues its Tiger Invitational play against Illinois on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1:30 p.m. following a game between Iowa and South Carolina.
