COLUMBIA, Mo.--Missouri post-collegian Christian Cantwell opened his outdoor season Saturday at the Kansas Relays with the world's leading throw in the shot put, winning with a 70 foot, 3¾ inch launch (21.43m). Cantwell topped his previous-best season-opening mark by over three feet in breaking his own KU Relays record. Also this weekend, the collegiate Tigers competed at the Cardinal Invitational.

What was maybe more impressive about Cantwell's performance was his series of six throws. With only one foul, Cantwell pushed all of his remaining tosses past at least 67-6¾ (20.59m), all of which would have won the event past former Ohio Stater Dan Taylor who was second at 65-4¼ (19.92m).

"I've had a really similar start this year to what I had in 2004, when I threw really well," Cantwell told the Kansas City Star, referring to the season in which he had a 14-meet winning streak, despite falling short of making the U.S. team at the Olympic trials. "I just can't get hurt, that's the only thing. The last couple of years, that's been a problem.

"But right now, I'm in really good shape. This was a good opener, and I'm looking for big things in the next couple of weeks."

Tiger post-collegian Derrick Peterson was fifth in the men's 800-meter run, clocking a season-best 1:49.28 in a race that saw the top eight run under 1:50. Kevin Hicks won with a 1:47.58, a new Kansas Relays record.

Cantwell and Peterson will compete next week at the Drake Relays in Des Moines.
