Columbia, Mo - The University of Missouri women's tennis team earned two home victories this weekend, defeating Drake and Northern Illinois at the Green Tennis Center.
The Tigers started their home season off right Saturday, beating Drake 5-2 behind three doubles victories and an impressive win by Hana Kraftova at the No. 1 singles position. Sunday Mizzou defeated Northern Illinois 7-0.
Saturday's victory against Drake included a sweep of the doubles matches and wins in the No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles positions. Highlighting the doubles matches, the team of Hana Kraftova and Chrissy Svetlic defeated Drake's Veronika Leszayova and Sarah Plowman 9-8 (7-4). Tiger Head Coach Blake Starkey believed the doubles matches gave Mizzou momentum. "I think doubles set the tone." In singles action, Mizzou senior Hana Kraftova defeated Drake's Irina Kalashnikova 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
The Tigers took their momentum from Saturday's win into Sunday's match against Northern Illinois. Mizzou won all five singles matches and both doubles matches to beat NIU 7-0. Stepping into the No. 1 singles position, Mizzou freshman Val Dandik defeated NIU's Doris Delgadillo 6-1,6-2. Tiger senior Hana Kraftova took the day off to recover from Saturday's match and prepare for Monday's showdown with Oklahoma. In doubles play, Missouri won the two matches that were played. The teams of Dandik/Olshanskaya and Pratzel/Josbena were victorious on the day.
Mizzou returns to action Monday, Feb. 13 when they host Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma at 3:00 P.M. All home matches are held at the Green Tennis Center in Columbia and are open to the public.
