TIGERS GO FOR FIRST SWEEP OF K-STATE SINCE 2001
Each game on the schedule of the Mizzou women's basketball team (15-4, 5-2 Big 12) seems to have significant ramifications on the Big 12 standings, and that trend certainly continues on Wednesday when the second-place Tigers head west to Manhattan, Kan., to face third-place Kansas State (15-4, 5-3).
The game takes on additional significance when considering that the Tigers dealt the Wildcats a 26-point loss in Mizzou Arena on Jan. 7, and will be going for a season sweep of Kansas State for the first time since 2001. That Jan. 7 win broke a nine-game losing streak for the Tigers at the hands of the Wildcats.
Kansas State enters the contest with a two-game winning streak, and has won four of its last five games after starting league play 1-2. The loss came by one point in overtime at Texas on Jan. 22.
TIGERS EXCEED LAST YEAR'S WIN TOTAL
Of all the measures of the success of this year's team, the most compelling might be this: With the win vs. Texas Tech on Saturday, Mizzou bumped its win total to 15 this season; the Tigers had 11 wins all of last year (11-18). In addition, the fifth Big 12 win of the season exceeded last year's entire season total (4-12).
Mizzou has won 14 of its last 16 games. Mizzou's 15-4 start is the second-best in school history through 19 games; it trails only the 16-3 start by two other teams, most recently the 1984-85 Tigers. In addition, the Tigers' 5-2 conference start is the best in their 10 years in the Big 12, and just a game off the all-time team best set by the 1985 Big Eight squad.
LAST TIME OUT: MIZZOU 65, TEXAS TECH 51
The Tiger trio of Christelle N'Garsanet, LaToya Bond and Carlynn Savant combined for 53 points and 24 rebounds in Mizzou's 65-51 win over Texas Tech in Big 12 Conference action Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
With its loss at Texas on Jan. 14, Mizzou dropped out of the Associated Press Top 25. That came one week after the Tigers appeared in the writers' poll (at No. 24) for the first time since the 1984-85 season. The Tigers are receiving votes this week in the No. 26 spot.
Close followers of the Tigers vividly recally the 2001 NCAA Sweet Sixteen squad and might wonder why that team wasn't ranked. It had more to do with the relative strength of the Big 12 - Mizzou was fifth in the league that year - and the fact that the final AP poll is released at the conclusion of the regular season, before the Tigers' deep run in the NCAA Tournament occurred. Mizzou was ranked 19th in the final coaches' poll of 2001; the Tigers are also currently the top "others receiving votes" team in that poll.
SERIES VS. KANSAS STATE
As mentioned before, the Jan. 7 win over the Wildcats snapped a nine-game losing streak to Kansas State. Now Mizzou will go for its first win in Bramlage Coliseum - and first season sweep of K-State - since the 2001 Sweet Sixteen squad did the trick..
Overall, Kansas State has a 36-32 edge in the all-time series, including 21-9 in Manhattan. Mizzou is 5-12 in Bramlage Coliseum.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Junior guard Claire Coggins (13.4 ppg) and Twiggy McIntyre (10.6 ppg) are coach Deb Patterson's top two scorers, while freshman Marlies Gipson is KSU's third-leading scorer (9.3 ppg) and top rebounder (6.5 rpg).
