Savant Tops in the Country in 3-Point Shooting

Jan. 31, 2006

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri junior forward Carlynn Savant (Euless, Texas / Trinity HS) is leading the nation in 3-point shooting, according to the latest statistics released from the NCAA this afternoon.

Savant, a 6-foot-1 forward, has made 40 of her 79 attempts from beyond the arc this season, which is a 50.6-percent clip. The only forward listed among the nation's top 30 Division I women's basketball sharpshooters, Savant is just ahead of UConn sophomore guard Mel Thomas (56-of-112, 50.0 percent). The top-ranked men's gunner, Indiana's Robert Vaden, is hitting on 50.5 percent of his 3-point attempts.

After beginning the season in a relative shooting slump - she made just 39 percent of her shots from the field, and shot 53 percent from the free-throw line in Mizzou's first seven games - Savant has been on a tear of late. In her last 12 games, Savant is shooting 52 percent from the field (56-of-107), 55 percent from 3-point range (29-of-53), and is converting on 89 percent of her charity tosses (16-of-18).

Savant and her Mizzou teammates play at Kansas State on Wednesday night before returning home this Saturday at 5 p.m. to face No. 11-ranked Oklahoma. That game on Saturday will be televised state-wide over the Mizzou Sports Network. Tickets are on sale at the Mizzou Arena Box Office, or by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS (884-PAWS in mid-Missouri) or going online to www.mutigers.com.
