Tigers Conclude Preseason Tune-Ups Against Missouri Southern
Following a 105-56 win over Bemidji State (Minn.) in its exhibition-opener, the hot-shooting University of Missouri men's basketball team (1-0 in exhibition play) returns to action on Tuesday (Nov. 8) for its preseason finale against the Missouri Southern Lions (1-0 in exhibition play) at Mizzou Arena ... The 7 p.m. contest will be televised live on the Mizzou Sports Network, with KMIZ carrying the broadcast ... Fox Sports Midwest personality Dan McLaughlin will call the action, with former Tiger All-American Jon Sundvold providing expert analysis.
Show-Me The Tigers
With exhibition traveling squads being phased out, Mizzou has made an effort to schedule local competition for its preseason contests ... Last season the Tigers faced Central Missouri State (100-73 win) and Northwest Missouri State (90-60 win) during the preseason, which offered both state institutions their first crack at the Tigers in nearly a decade ... Tonight, Missouri Southern will get its first-ever game with Mizzou, marking the first of two in-state contests for MU this season ... Following tonight's game, Missouri will host UMKC on Nov. 29 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Tiger Tune-Ups Under Snyder
Mizzou ran its exhibition record to a perfect 13-0 under Head Coach Quin Snyder last Tuesday (Nov. 2) as the Tigers handled Bemidji State by a 105-56 margin ... Mizzou has now eclipsed the century mark fives times in the preseason under Snyder, with the 49-point win being its largest margin of victory ... The 105 points were the second-most scored in the preseason by the Tigers (under Snyder), falling just shy of the 110 registered against Team AAU in a 110-79 victory on Nov. 12, 2000 ... Prior to Wednesday's victory, a 39-point triumph over Global Sports (104-65) was the most comfortable win for Mizzou during the preseason ... In Mizzou's 13 "tune-up" games, the Tigers have enjoyed a 93.4-69.8 scoring differential (23.6 ppg).
Getting To Know Today's Foe
Missouri Southern comes into today's contest 1-0 in exhibition play following a 98-89 win over Livin' the Dream ... That Livin' the Dream traveling squad featured former UCLA Bruin Jaron Rush, the older brother of former Tiger and current Charlotte Bobcat Kareem Rush ... Senior center Dan Jones led five Missouri Southern players in double figures with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting ... Quentin Edwards and Ed Miles each chipped in 16 points a piece and guard Tyler Ryerson dished out 10 assists to help MSU overcome a 46-39 halftime deficit ... The Lions earned that nine-point win due to their outstanding shooting ... MSU shot just under 57 percent for the game and hit 60 percent (9-of-15) of its shots from three-point range ... Missouri Southern, who returns three starters, finished the 2004-05 season with a 14-18 overall record, including an 8-10 mark in MIAA play ... Edwards is the team's top returning scorer (11.5) and rebounder (3.7) from last season.
What You May Not Know About Missouri Southern University
Missouri Southern University is located in Joplin, Mo., and is a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) ... Founded in 1937 as Joplin Junior College, Missouri Southern became a four-year institution in 1968 ... MSU has a current student enrollment of 5,740.
Shooting Exhibition
Mizzou burned up the nets in its 105-56 exhibition win over Bemidji State, hitting 35-of-55 shots (63.6 percent) from the floor and an impressive 7-of-12 shots (58.3 percent) from three-point range in the 49-point win ... The Tigers opened the game by hitting 62 percent of its field goals in the first half (19-of-29), but actually saw those numbers improve in the second frame, hitting 17-of-26 shots (65.4) ... Mizzou also showed great discipline from the experimental three-point line (20' 9"), hitting 4-of-7 treys in the opening half and 3-of-5 in the second.
Tigers Lockdown The Perimeter
After seeing Bemidji State open the contest 3-of-4 from three-point range, the Mizzou defense locked in on BSU's perimeter-oriented game plan and limited the Beavers to 1-of-15 shooting (6.7 percent) from bonus distance the remainder of the contest ... An excellent perimeter shooting club that hit nearly 41-percent of its treys last season, the Tigers allowed just one triple over the game's final 36:42 and forced misses on BSU's final 10 three-point attempts, including all-seven attempts in the second half.
Defense ... Defense ...
In addition to its three-point disruption, the Tigers held the Beavers to just 29.2 percent shooting for the game, including a 7-of-32 (21.9 percent) effort over the final 20 minutes ... The Tigers also forced Bemidji State into 24 turnovers and converted those miscues into 35 points, 24 of which came in the opening period.
l Mizzou had a stretch of nine consecutive points where each of its tallies came via Bemidji State turnovers ... Following a Kevin Young steal and lay-up at the 15:15 mark of the opening period, Mizzou scored its next nine tallies due to BSU miscues and flipped an 11-9 deficit into a 18-3 lead at the 12:38 mark.
It's A Game Of Runs
Four separate runs of at least 14 points helped lift Mizzou to that 105-56 final margin in the exhibition-opener against Bemidji State.
l Trailing 11-5 at the 16:42 mark, the Tigers embarked on a 23-4 spurt over the next 7:34 to snare a 28-15 lead with 9:08 left in the first half.
l Leading 30-22 at 7:53, the Tigers closed the next 7:41 with a 27-9 rally to push their margin to 57-31.
l Mizzou opened the second half with a 20-6 run over a span of 8:24 to build a 77-39 advantage, before capping the emphatic win with a 24-10 run over the final nine minutes to finish with that 105-56 margin of victory.
Playing Beyond Their Years
It was just an exhibition game but Mizzou's four newcomers quickly dispelled any notion of opening-night jitters ... Mizzou rookies Marcus Watkins and Leo Lyons both reached double figures in points, with Watkins pouring in 13 on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor and Lyons scoring 10 in addition to six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals ... Fellow freshman Matt Lawrence swished home two treys en route to eight points, while junior college transfer James Douglas played 17 minutes and grabbed a pair of boards.
Balancing Act: Ten Tigers Play Double Figures Minutes In Exhibition-Opener
Junior guard Thomas Gardner led a group of 10 Tigers that played at least 14 minutes during the Nov. 2 exhibition-opener vs. Bemidji State ... Gardner played 28 minutes and scored a game high 22 points, while Marshall Brown (25 minutes), Leo Lyons (23 minutes), Jason Horton (20 minutes) and Jimmy McKinney (20 minutes) all topped the 20-minute plateau ... Marcus Watkins and Kevin Young each played 18 minutes, while James Douglas (17 minutes), Kalen Grimes (15 minutes) and Matt Lawrence (14 minutes) rounded out the balanced playing time totals.
The Ultimate Warrior
Coaches and teammates call sophomore forward Marshall Brown "The Warrior" for his hard-nosed style of play on the court ... Brown lived up to the monicker in the exhibition-opener, grabbing a career-high tying eight boards and playing excellent defense in helping to hold Bemidji State to just 29.2 percent shooting from the floor ... While the numbers don't "officially" count, the eight rebounds tied a career with the eight he recorded Jan. 26, 2005, vs. Colorado and was a much improved effort from the 1.9 boards he averaged as a freshman ... The Austin, Texas, native also showed a "Warrior's" mentality on the offensive end of the floor, scoring a career high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
20-Something: Thomas Gardner Hits 20-Point Plateau For Fourth Time
It won't count because of the game's exhibition status, but Thomas Gardner's 22-point outburst in the opener against Bemidji State marked the fourth time the Portland, Ore., native has topped the 20-point barrier during his Mizzou career ... Gardner swished home 8-of-14 shots in the contest en route to the 22 tallies, 16 of which came in the opening period to help fuel the Tiger rout ... Gardner topped 20 points twice as a sophomore with 23 points at UNLV and 23 at home vs. Kansas ... He initially scored 20 points as a freshman in a home win vs. the Runnin' Rebels.
Center Of Attention
Mizzou got effective production from its two-headed center, Kevin Young and Kalen Grimes ... The duo combined for 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 33 minutes of action vs. Bemidji State and gave the Tigers added muscle in the paint defensively ... Young started the contest and played 18 minutes, while Grimes hit 2-of-3 shots and grabbed five rebounds in 15 minutes.
Tigers To Play Nov. 17 On ESPN2 With NIT Win Over Sam Houston State
Officials from ESPN confirmed that a Mizzou win over Sam Houston State on Nov. 14 in the opening round of the Preseason NIT would result in a date, time and network shift for the Tiger's second round match-up vs. Drexel or Princeton ... The second round contest was originally slated for Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. on the Mizzou Sports Network, but now the Tigers will entertain a nationally-televised audience on ESPN2 at 7 p.m.
Tigers Have Tough Slate
With the release of the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll it became clear just how difficult Mizzou's 2005-06 schedule is ... The Tigers have scheduled contests against four teams currently ranked in the Top 25 (No. 3 Texas, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 17 Illinois and No. 23 Iowa State) and could face No. 1 Duke, No. 12 Memphis, No. 14 Alabama or No. 18 UCLA in the final rounds of the Preseason NIT in Madison Square Garden in New York City ... The Tigers also have scheduled games against No. 29 Kansas, No. 31 Texas Tech, No. 35 Oklahoma State and No. 49 Texas A&M.
Returning Production Much Improved From One Year Ago
A year ago at this time, a number of question marks hovered around the Tigers as the loss of a talented senior group left Mizzou with just 39 percent of its scoring and 47 percent of its rebounding coming back ... Those numbers have flipped in favor of the Tigers at the start of the 2005-06 season however, as nearly 60 percent of Missouri's scoring (1306-of-2188) and rebounding (689-of-1148) returns for Quin Snyder's seventh season ... The Tigers also welcome back 65 percent of their steals (134-206), 67 percent of their assists (275-of-408) and 74 percent of their blocked shots (53-of-72) from last season's postseason-qualifying squad.
Televised Tigers: Every Mizzou Contest This Season On Television
The Tigers will have plenty of tube time this season as each of Mizzou's games this year will be carried live on the Mizzou Sports Network, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+ and CBS ... Starting with the exhibition season, MSN will broadcast 18 Tiger contests, while ESPN (2) will carry games against Illinois (Dec. 21) and Kansas (Jan. 16) ... Mizzou could appear on ESPN2 four times this season, three of which could occur in the Preseason NIT ... The Tigers' Feb. 18 date at Kansas will be on CBS.
These Guys Have Seen It All
Head Coach Quin Snyder has assembled one of the Big 12's more veteran coaching staffs, as he, associate head coach Melvin Watkins and assistant coach Jeff Meyer have a combined 30 years of experience as head coaches at the collegiate level ... Snyder is entering his seventh season on the sidelines at Mizzou, while Watkins spent a combined eight years at North Carolina-Charlotte (1996-98) and Texas A&M (1998-04) ... Meyer is the most seasoned Mizzou coach having enjoyed 16 years as head coach at Liberty (1981-97).
Snyder Adds Big 12 Veteran Lance Irvin To Coaching Staff
There couldn't have been a more natural fit to join Quin Snyder's coaching staff than former Texas A&M and Iowa State assistant coach Lance Irvin ... Already a veteran of the Big 12 coaching scene, the 36-year-old Irvin spent the 2001-02 season at Iowa State, before joining Melvin Watkins' staff at Texas A&M from 2002-03 ... Irvin also sports strong ties to Mizzou, as his brother, Byron Irvin, played for the Tigers from 1987-89 and was a first round draft choice of the Portland Trailblazers.
Tigers Picked Eighth In Preseason Big 12 Coaches Poll
The Texas Longhorns were the near unanimous favorite to win the Big 12 Conference title, conference coaches announced on Oct. 12 ... The Longhorns got 10-of-12 first-place votes, with Oklahoma securing the other two ... Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech rounded out the top five, while Iowa State, who opened the year No. 23 in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Polls was slotted sixth ... The Tigers, led by returning starters Jimmy McKinney, Kevin Young and Jason Horton and super-sub Thomas Gardner were picked eighth.
